INSIDE THE LAS VEGAS DESERT CLASSIC
Tournament: Las Vegas Desert Classic
Location: The Legacy Golf Club | Las Vegas, Nev.
Par | Yardage: 72 | 7,110 Yards

FROM THE TEE
  • Finishing his second round of the 2021-22 season and leading the way for the Mountain Lions was Travis Bossio who shot one-over par (73). Bassio's day started with a bogey on hole No. 11 but the redshirt junior went on to shoot two-under the next eight holes before wrapping up the day with three birdies and 12 pars.
  • Three different Mountain Lions all came in at a 79 (+7) after the opening round with Barrett Jones, Brady Haake, and Lucas Howell all carding the score. Jones and Haake each birdied three holes with a birdie on hole No. 11 (par 4) but the course's front-nine is where the three Mountain Lions ran into trouble with a combined 17-over par being carded. Howell was able to notch a two-over par on the back-nine of The Legacy Golf Club by paring five of the nine holes while birdieing the par 5 hole No. 17.
  • Freshman Rio Newcombe concludes the first day of play in Las Vegas with an 80 (+8). Newcombe was able to par eight holes including a string of three consecutive pars from holes one through three with and added three birdies in his first round. But triple bogeys on No. 8 and No. 16 (par 4's) slightly setback the freshman as he finished his day strong with a birdie on the par 5 hole No. 9.

TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • University of Missouri-St. Louis currently leads the 19-team tournament with a six-under par 282.
  • Ian McCrary of Missouri-St. Louis paces the field of 96 golfers with a 67 (-5) after shooting a three-under par on the front-nine and two-under par on the back-nine.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Par 5's have been the bright spot for UCCS through Sunday's play as the Mountain Lions swung their way to a score of six-under par which ties for the second best score in the 19-team field.
  • Rio Newcombe and Travis Bossio help lead that category as they've each notched scores of three-under par on par 5's.
  • As the Mountain Lions' leading scorer, Bossio is currently tied for 32nd.

UP NEXT
  • Day two of the Las Vegas Desert Classic will replicate Sunday's start with a 9 a.m. (MT) shotgun start time.
