POMONA, Calif. – UCCS Baseball suffers their third straight one-run loss of the series as California State Polytechnic University walks it off Sunday afternoon at a final score of 5-4.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 4, Cal Poly Pomona 5
Records: UCCS (1-3, 0-0 RMAC), CPP (3-1, 0-0 CCAA)
Location: Scolinos Field | Pomona, Calif.
Series: UCCS now trails in the all-time series 9-10 with Cal Poly Pomona winning the last three matchups.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Mountain Lions have pumped out doubles all series and Sunday was no different with the Mountain Lions dropping a three-run inning right out of the gate off four hits, including two doubles. It was
Jaeden Hegmann who got the bats going for UCCS with a single as
Aaron Faragallah followed it up with a two-out RBI double for the Mountain Lions', and the game's, first run of the game. Redshirt freshman
Brad Madison followed suit with a double to right field the very next at-bat to score Faragallah and cruise into second base for a 2-0 lead. The first inning was not yet finished as
Andrew Danko dug in to single to left center to bring another run across and put the Mountain Lions up 3-0 to start the game.
• Starter
John Hoffman and the Mountain Lions were successful in getting through the bottom half of the first unscathed, but Cal Poly Pomona put up their first run of the game in the second inning as Nick Lugo came around to score via sacrifice fly after he led off the inning with a double to make it 3-1 in favor of UCCS.
• The next inning, CPP tied the game up by plating two runs off a single and sac fly as a forced groundball double play from
Kiichi Sato and Hegmann got UCCS out of the inning and stopped CPP in their tracks to maintain the 4-3 lead.
• In need of some offense, UCCS found one run in the top of the fourth to retake the lead as the Mountain Lions third double of the game came off the bat of Hegmann to drive in
Luis Samorano and make bring the game to a 4-3 UCCS advantage.
• With the lead in hand, Hoffman and the UCCS defense delivered a scoreless fifth to keep the one-run lead intact as Hoffman completed his outing to make way for reliever
Cole Philips. After a scoreless sixth for the Mountain Lions, Cal Poly Pomona found themselves in a position to tie the game up once again as Lugo drew a 3-1 walk and came in to score from first base off a double to left center as the game moved to 4-4 through six innings of play.
• UCCS struggled to find baserunners as one hit came the Mountain Lions' way in the last three innings, leaving the door open for CPP heading into the bottom of the ninth. UCCS'
Hunter Owens was able to strikeout CPP's Ryan Knowles to start the inning, but the Broncos notched a double and single in the following at-bats to give them two runners in scoring position. CPP then went to small ball to close out the game as Tyler Chaffee laid down a bunt for the base hit and walkoff win, 5-4.
