SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Walks and hit batters plague the Mountain Lions in game one on Friday as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team comes up short in a 3-5 loss to San Francisco State University.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 3, SFSU 5
Records: UCCS (1-4, 0-0 RMAC), SFSU (1-0, 0-0 CCAA)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• In a game that saw nine total hits, senior
Walker Rumsey accounted for the first of the game as he broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff homerun to give UCCS the early 1-0 lead.
• Starter
Dylan Grierson and the UCCS defense held SFSU at bay by getting through the first two innings with one hit before the Gators jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. SFSU registered three free bases off two walks and a hit-by-pitch with an added two singles to take their first lead of the game.
• San Francisco State followed up with one run in each of the next two innings as both runs reached base off a hit-by-pitch to extend their lead 5-1.
• After giving up one run in the fifth, reliever
Cole Philip shut down the Gators to help put the Mountain Lions in striking range as the redshirt freshman bagged six strikeouts in the next three innings while allowing no hits to put the bats back in UCCS' hands.
• The Mountain Lions came up just short of getting a run across in the seventh after stranding a runner on third, but UCCS came back to make it interesting in the top of the ninth.
Kiichi Sato got things started by reaching base on a Gators' miscue in the infield as
Aaron Faragallah and
Caleb Stubbings notched back-to-back singles to load up the bases with no outs in the inning. Needing a ball in play,
Kasey Campbell did just that to bag an RBI off a fielder's choice to leave runners on first and third. A groundball away from closing the game, SFSU's Justice Naraghi forced a groundball double play to end the game as the Mountain Lions fall in game one, 3-5.
