COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Tuesday, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced the 2022 RMAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Team with UCCS Women's Soccer collecting six All-RMAC honors, including goalkeeper
Alexis Walker who is named this year's RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Walker was additionally named first team all-conference with
Makayla Merlo and
Makenna Fowler also earning All-RMAC First Team distinctions as
Kaitlin Hinkle,
Annie Louthan, and
Zoe Sims all receive All-RMAC Second Team honors.
Colorado School of Mines claims three major awards with Kevin Fickes winning RMAC Coach of the Year, freshman Afton Rasco earning RMAC Freshman of the Year, and redshirt junior Jordan Barnhart being voted RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. Redshirt sophomore Lila Dere of Colorado Mesa University is voted this year's RMAC Player of the Year.
Walker becomes the program's fifth all-time RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year as she claims her first career All-RMAC First Team distinction. The Castle Rock, Colo. native has been exceptional in frame for the Mountain Lions with Walker posting 11 clean sheets, giving her not only the most within the RMAC but the third most in Division II. Walker has used all of her 5-foot-10 frame to post the conference's third-best save percentage while allowing just 13 goals on the season to boast the second-lowest goals against average in the RMAC (.684). At a 13-4-2 record, Walker has played every minute in goal to tie for the most goalie minutes played in the country (1,710) where she has bagged a total of 54 saves. Her impressive career-year has resulted in a new single season record for shutouts, the program's second most all-time shutouts (19), the program's fifth most saves (95), and three RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week selections.
Makenna Fowler earns her first career All-RMAC honor as the 2022 first teamer has played in 17 games with 16 starts on a stout Mountain Lion defense that owns a league-high 11 team shutouts. The Arvada, Colo. native is one of six Mountain Lions to surpass 1,000 minutes on the pitch this season (1,342) as she's registered 10 matches of playing the full 90 minutes. Fowler has made her presence known to opposing offenses by helping limit them to 0.68 goals per game. Outside of her stellar defensive play, Fowler has also made offensive contributions by registering her ninth career assist in a key 1-0 victory over Colorado State University Pueblo as she also adds three shots and two shots on goal to her stat sheet this season.
Redshirt sophomore
Makayla Merlo makes her second straight appearance on the All-RMAC First team after starting in all 19 games for the team's fifth most minutes (1,490). In addition to Merlo's strong midfield play, the Broomfield, Colo. native has caused issues for opposing defenses by registering a team-high 48 shots, 18 shots on goal, and 13 points. Merlo's offensive production ranks her tied for the third most shots and fifth most assists in the RMAC with her also recording at least one shot in 18 of her 19 games played this season.
Fresh off scoring the game-winning goal against Fort Lewis College in RMAC Quarterfinals on Sunday, redshirt junior
Kaitlin Hinkle garners her first career All-RMAC selection. Tied with the team-lead in goals (six), Hinkle has been clutch for the Mountain Lions in 2022 as her 16 points includes two game-winning goals to tie her for the second most game-winning goals in program history. Hinkle has notched two braces this season to post a total of seven career braces with the forward also compiling four assists, 19 shots, and eight shot on goal this season. The Pueblo, Colo. native has been off the charts in the last month with Hinkle scoring one or more points in six of the last seven matches, including four points off UCCS's two goals in the 2-2 draw against No. 10 Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 9.
After earning All-Great American Conference Second Team last season, transfer
Annie Louthan continued her stellar play in her first season as a Mountain Lion by earning All-RMAC Second Team honors. The team-leader in minutes (1,550), Louthan has yet to miss a game with a start in all 19 games this season as the sophomore has played a key role in holding the opposition to just 8.5 shots per game. Behind UCCS' 11 shutouts, Louthan and the Mountain Lion defense have notched the RMAC's third-best shutout percentage of .579 that also ranks 30
th in Division II. On top of logging 90 minutes in 10 different games this season, Louthan has shown her offensive ability by netting three goals for six points including her first game-winning goal as a Mountain Lion in the 4-0 win over New Mexico Highlands University.
Redshirt junior
Zoe Sims has made the most out of her last season in the black & gold as the Colorado Springs native collects her first career All-RMAC Second Team selection. Owner of the team's third most minutes (1,532), Sims has been an anchor for the UCCS defense by playing full time in 11 games this season as her impressive play has helped lead to six games of the team not giving up four or more shots, and an impressive 10 matches of not allowing more than three shots on goal. Sims has not only made an impact on the defensive side of the ball with Sims tying her career high in both assists (two) and points (four) so far in 2022. In addition to her all-conference honor, Sims has also earned RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll and was voted RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27.
UCCS Women's Soccer looks to continue their RMAC Tournament run tomorrow evening as the Mountain Lions prepare to host Regis University in the RMAC Semifinals. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
