Men's Golf Opens Season with Fifth Place Finish in The Writz at Mile High

DENVER, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team moves up to finish in fifth place at the Writz at Mile High on Tuesday after carding a 15-over par 879 through a total of three rounds of play.

FROM THE TEE
  • Ignacio de La Vega continued to pace the Mountain Lions on Tuesday after matching his round two score of a 73 to finish with a two-over par 218 (72, 73, 73) and place tied for 11th. He added five birdies in his final round and birdied four of the last six holes on the front nine.
  • Barrett Jones matched de La Vega's one-over par 73 in the third round by making four of his eight birdies in the tournament as he finished in the top-25 with a tied for 25th result off a six-over par 222 (76, 73, 73).
  • Freshman Rio Newcombe recorded the second-best finish for the Mountain Lions as he shot five strokes better in his final round to come out with an even par 72 and 220 overall for the tournament (71, 77, 72). Newcombe made six birdies on the day with five of those coming on the back nine with a birdie on holes 17 and 18.
  • Redshirt freshman Brady Haake turned in his second-best round of the tournament to place tied for 19th on a five-over par 221 (75, 72, 74) as he led the team with a total of 37 pars while also adding seven birdies in the tournament.
  •  At a final score of 230, Lucas Howell repeats his second-round score of a three-over par 75 as he concludes his first tournament of the year with six birdies and 35 pars.
  • Competing individually, Brandon Bervig swings his way to a 31st place finish after carding a two-over par 74 to total a 224 (73, 77, 74).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Colorado Christian University wins the Writz at Mile High with a three-over par 867 to best the field of 14-teams.
  • Jake Doggett of Midwestern State was the individual champion after posting a final score of four-under par 212 and winning a two-hole playoff to claim the title.
     
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • UCCS and CCU posted the best par-4 average in the tournament with a 4.13 average and 19-over par.
  • UCCS was one of three teams to post the second-best par-5 average in the tournament with a 4.97 average and two-under par.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will be back on the links Monday, Sep. 20 and Tuesday, Sep. 21 as they head down to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the WNMU South Central Preview, hosted by Western New Mexico University at the UNM Golf Course.
