Men's Golf Finishes Sixth After Day One of The Writz at Mile High

DENVER, Colo. – After day one at the Writz at Mile High, hosted by Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team cards a 587 to place themselves in sixth place through the first two rounds of play.

FROM THE TEE
  • Ignacio de La Vega leads the field for the Mountain Lions after posting a 72 followed by a 73 for a score of 145. The redshirt senior walked away with a team leading seven birdies as he sits tied for 13th in the field of 79 golfers.
  • Freshman Rio Newcombe shot the lowest round for UCCS as the Gilbert, Ariz. Native registered a 71 in the opening round that included one of only eight eagles scored on Monday. Newcombe finished out his day with a 77 in round to total 148 on the day to be tied for 23rd.
  • Redshirt freshman Brady Haake turned in the second lowest score at 147 to be placed tied for 20th as he recorded five birdies through two rounds to shoot a 75 in round one and an improved 72 in round two.
  • Barrett Jones followed the same trend as Haake with Jones registering a 76 in round one and improving by three strokes in round two by draining four out his five birdies on the day. His combined score of 149 puts him tied for 32nd heading into round three.
  • At a final day one score of 155, Lucas Howell cards an 80 in round one and improves to a 75 with a five-stroke improvement after wrapping up with five birdies on the day.
  • Competing individually is redshirt sophomore Brandon Bervig who is placed in the middle of the pack by carding who shot a 73 followed by a 77 to finish with a 155 and recording five birdies on the day.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Midwestern State University and Colorado Christian University leads the 14-team tournament with a 576.
  • Regis University's Matteo Polla leads all 79 golfers with a five-under par 139.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS posted the second-best par-4 average through two rounds of play with a 4.12 average and 13-overpar.
  • The Mountain Lions registered the third most pars out on Monday with 113 as they also were one of five teams to record an eagle.
 
UP NEXT
  • The third and final round of the Writz at Mile High will begin at 8:40 a.m. as the Mountain Lions start on hole No. 10.
