COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Day two of the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open did not disappoint as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field teams kept the foot on the gas pedal by winning six events on Saturday.
Saturday began with the field events as sophomore
Dakota Abbott blew the doors off in the men's triple jump by setting a new school record, setting a new personal best, and taking first in the event with a provisional mark of 15.30m. Senior
Will Ross faired well with a second place provisional mark of 14.75m.
Miah Keller paved the way for UCCS in the women's triple jump as she recorded a second place jump of 11.44m as
Alexis Carroll (10.94m),
Audrey Bloomquist (10.88m), and
Christine Bailey (10.81m) finished in the top-10 at sixth, seventh, and eighth place respectively.
In the men's shot put,
Parker Bays and
Colton Homuth worked their way to top-5 finishes as Bays threw a mark of 15.36 for fourth, while Homuth was just shy of the freshman with a mark of 15.35 for fifth place.
Justyn Loper threw his way to a top-10 finish as the freshman threw to a distance of 14.47m for ninth place.
At the pole vault,
Brenna Kuskie landed just short of a provisional mark as the junior tied for fifth place with a mark of 3.40m.
Harrison Huhn and
Dawson Hopkinson were able to land in the top-5 after posting a 4.63m mark to finish fourth and sixth respectively.
Inside the track, home field advantage proved to be true for the Mountain Lions as they took a clean sweep in the 60m and 3000m. On the men's side in the 60m,
Deshon Elcock clocked in at 6.90s with
Kayla Waterman sprinting to a time of 7.75s in the women's 60m as both student-athletes took first place.
Kayla Zink was just edged out by Waterman but was able to finish in second at 7.76s with
Brittany Fuchs (7.86s) and
Shewli Ghosh (7.98s) rounding out the top-5 with fourth and fifth place finishes respectively in the women's 60m. Sophomore Afeworki Zeru topped the competition of 26 athletes in the men's 3000m by running to a time of 8:45.93, while
Kayla Wooten bested her competition on the track for the second day in a row as she finished with a time of 10:36.09 in the women's 3000m.
For the 60m hurdles, UCCS registered a pair of second place finishes as
Matt Hanson took second on the men's side at a time of 8.28s as
Terra Valadez just beat out
Maggie Remsberg (9.110s) with a time of 9.103s in the women's race.
Zaire Jackson solidified his fourth place (8.94s) finish in the men's 60m hurdles as
Cameron Tracy finished as the third top-5 Mountain Lion in the women's 60m hurdles with a fifth-place time of 9.34s.
The top-5 finishes kept coming for UCCS as
Dejah Glover tallied an event win in the women's 400m by posting a first-place time of 58.96s. Two Mountain Lions then finished fourth and fifth in the men's 400m as
Dillon Andrews finished in fourth place (50.72s) and
Angel Laca earning fifth place (50.98s).
To top off another stellar day at Mountain Lion Fieldhouse, three middle distance runners bagged top-5 finishes between the men's and women's 800m. The men's 800m saw
David Higgins finish in 1:57.04 to place second in the event, leaving
Maia Austin and
Layla Almasri to notch third and fourth place finishes by finishing the women's 800m in 2:15.60 and 2:20.30.
After hosting their second home meet of the indoor season, UCCS now heads to Lubbock, Texas next weekend for the two-day Texas Tech Shootout on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 before coming back home to host the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb. 28-29).
