PREVIEW | Women's Soccer Kicks Off the 2019 Season with LCU and #10 West Texas A&M

This Week's Games
  • To open the 2019 season, the #24 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team will play host to Lubbock Christian University (LCU) and #10 West Texas A&M University (WTAMU).
  • On Thursday, September 5, the Mountain Lions play LCU. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
  • On Saturday, September 7, UCCS will take on their first ranked opponent of the year in #10 West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Game Coverage Last Time Out
  • The Mountain Lions finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 16-3-3, including a 12-1 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). UCCS also ended last season ranked in the top 25 as they owned the #24 spot in the nation.
    • Home Record: 7-1-1
    • Away Record: 8-2-0
    • Neutral Site Record: 1-0-2.
  •  The Mountain Lions finished last season ranked in the top five of the RMAC in the following statistical categories:
    • Goals and goals per game: 62, 2.82/game (Both led the RMAC)
    • Assists and assists per game: 39, 1.77/game (Both led the RMAC)
    • Points and points per game: 163, 7.41/game (Both led the RMAC)
    • Shots and shots per game: 420, 19.09/game (Both second in the RMAC)
    • Shots on goal and shots on goal per game: 209, 9.50 (Both second in the RMAC)
  • UCCS also allowed only 22 goals over the course of the season, an average of one per game, which ranked sixth in the RMAC.
  • The Mountain Lions went on to claim second place in the RMAC Tournament last season following a tough loss to Colorado School of Mines in the championship game by a score of 0-3. In the NCAA Tournament, UCCS won their first game in spectacular fashion, as they defeated Angelo State University 3-2 in a double overtime thriller.
  • Unfortunately, UCCS's season would end in the next round against West Texas A&M. After completing an entire game and two overtimes, the game would go into penalty kicks and UCCS would fall just short, 4-3.
RMAC Record/Standings
  • Last season, UCCS finished with a 12-1 record in the RMAC, good enough for second best in the conference.
  • Entering the 2019 season, the Mountain Lions hold the #2 spot in the RMAC Preseason Rankings behind last year's champion Colorado School of Mines.
The Series
  • Against LCU, UCCS holds a 1-0 record as the Mountain Lions defeated the Chaparrals 2-1 last season in the only matchup between the two teams, which came under Head Coach Sian Hudson.
  • Against West Texas A&M, the series has been historically close as UCCS holds a slight advantage with a 3-2-1 record. In the regular season, UCCS has played WTAMU even with a 2-2 record. In the postseason, the series stands at 1-0-1, with WTAMU winning the most recent matchup on penalty kicks.
  • Lucky for UCCS, they own a 3-1 record against the Lady Buffs when playing at home, which should yield them an advantage come Saturday.
  • Since the beginning of Coach Hudson's tenure in 2017, UCCS has a 2-1-1 record against WTAMU.
Scouting the Opponent
  • LCU finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 9-10, including an 8-6 record in the Heartland Conference, which ranked fourth. Last season, the Lady Chaparrals scored 31 goals while allowing 23 in 19 games.
  • Other notable statistics:
    • Assists: 29
    • Points: 91
    • Shots on goal per game: 6.37
  • Individually, the Lady Chaparrals were led by freshman forward Makenna Pate and sophomore midfielder Allison Scott. Pate led the team in goals (eight), assists (five), and points (21), all of which ranked top-10 in the conference. Scott was close behind Pate with six goals, four assists and 16 points, all of which were second on the team.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Wise spent the majority of the year in the net for the Lady Chaparrals and racked up 58 saves and a save percentage of 75 percent. She would finish the season with an 8-9 record.
  • West Texas A&M finished last season with an overall record of 15-4-3, including a 10-1-1 record in the Lone Star Conference. The Lady Buffs scored 43 goals (led the conference) while allowing only 19 in 22 games played. They also finished last season ranked #7 in the nation.
  • Other notable statistics:
    • Assists: 24
    • Shots on goal percentage: 52 percent
    • Points:110
  • Offensively, the Lady Buffs were led by freshman forwards Khaline Jacob and Hannah Kelley-Lusk. Jacob led the team in goals with 11, which was also tied for the second most in the conference. Her one assists gave her 23 points on the season, second most on the team and third most in the conference. Kelley-Lusk was second on the team in goals with nine but led the team in assists (six) and points (24). Her six assists and 24 points both ranked second in the conference as well.
  • Senior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel spent all season in the net for West Texas A&M last season and racked up 104 saves, nine shutouts, and a save percentage of 83 percent. Her 104 saves and nine shutouts both ranked second in the conference.
Hot Takes
  • Last season, sophomore midfielder Tarah Patterson, sophomore forward Tori Maydew and freshman forward Savannah Mills were among the top goal scorers for UCCS. Patterson netted nine goals (third on the team, eighth in the RMAC) and racked up nine assists (led the RMAC) for her 27 points (second on the team, tied for third in the conference). Those 27 points also rank second all-time in UCCS history for a single season.

  • Patterson also ranks first All-Time in UCCS history in career points per game (1.139) and shots on goal per game (1.81), second all-time in assists per game (.302) and fourth all-time in goals per game (.418).
  • Maydew finished last season with the second most goals on the team (10, tied for sixth in the RMAC) and the third most points (20). Maydew is now tied for eighth in UCCS history for goals with 13 and ranks eighth all-time in goals per game (.302). Her 10 goals were also a UCCS record for goals in a sophomore season.
  • Mills finished the 2018 season with eight goals (fourth on the team) and two assists for her 18 points (fourth on the team). Her eight goals were the second most by a freshman in UCCS history and she currently ranks fifth all-time for UCCS in career goals per game (.40).
Award Winners
  • Several returning players were recognized with awards at the end of last season. The list of players includes: Tarah Patterson, Aleesa Muir, Tori Maydew, Savannah Mills, Ella Fischer, Caitlin Esterle, and Makenna Fuhrmann.
  • Patterson received two All-Region nods, United Soccer Coaches All-South Central Region First Team and D2CCA All-South Central Region First Team. She also was named to the All-RMAC First Team.

UCCS Under Head Coach Sian Hudson
  • Since her tenure began in 2017, Coach Hudson has amassed an impressive record of 33-8-4. She has also led UCCS to the RMAC Tournament twice (winning the championship in 2017) and the NCAA Tournament twice (losing in the semifinals in 2017). Hudson owns an RMAC Playoff Record of 4-1-1 and an NCAA Playoff Record of 3-1-2.
Upcoming Games
  • Next weekend, the Mountain Lions will be traveling to California to take on two non-conference opponents. On Friday, September 13, UCCS will face off against California Polytechnic State University at 5:30 p.m. (MT). On Sunday, September, 15, UCCS will take on California State University San Bernardino at 1:30 p.m. (MT).
