KEARNEY, Neb. – Competing on a rare Thursday afternoon, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field teams took part in Nebraska-Kearney's Loper Invitational.
On the men's side, sprinters
Caleb Simons and
LaChristopher Smith placed second and third after crossing the finish line with NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times of 21.07 and 21.24 seconds respectively.
Smith also won the 100m (10.72 seconds) while also running a leg in the winning 4x100m relay (41.52 seconds), which included Simons as well as
Deshon Elcock and Johnathan Douglas.
The Mountain Lions then took second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:20.95.
Cameron Wright, a freshman, placed fourth in the pole vault with provisional qualifying height of 4.81m.
On the women's side, thrower
Sierra Suazo placed second in the discus by throwing a provisional qualifying distance of 48.67m on her first attempt.
Other winners included
Kaija Crowe taking the long jump (5.65m) as
Josie Eder won the high jump with a height of 1.58m.
On the track,
Kamerin Valdes,
Kayla Zink, Nicole Morpugo, and
Kaija Crowe were second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 47.84 seconds.
Zink was also productive at the meet as she placed second in the 100m (12.06 seconds) and was third in the 200m (24.65 seconds).
UCCS is back in action this Saturday when they compete in Colorado School of Mines' Kit Mayer Invitational.
