Mountain Lions in Second Place After First Day of 2025 RMAC Indoor Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After one day of competition inside the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse at the 2025 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's track & field teams both sit in second place with the women's team holding 65 points and the men's team possessing 54 points. In the field of competition, the Mountain Lions combined to record 19 NCAA provisional qualifying marks while winning six individual event championships on their way to a total of nine podium appearances.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Day one of the indoor conference championship meet began bright and early on Friday morning in the men's weight throw and the Mountain Lions proved to be plenty awake as their top three throwers combined to score a total of 19 points in the event. The group was led by senior Luke Hard, who earned a gold medal and scored 10 points with a first place toss of 19.91m that registered as both an RMAC indoor championship meet record and a new Mountain Lion Fieldhouse facility record in addition to easily surpassing the NCAA provisional qualifying threshold. Junior Michael Roberts and sophomore Hayden Cuevas also did their share in the point scoring as Roberts earned a fourth-place finish with a provisional qualifying toss of 18.54m while Cuevas surpassed the provisional qualifying threshold for the first time this season with a personal best mark of 18.45m that was good for fifth place.
  • The Mountain Lions scored an incredible 26 points in the women's long jump with sophomores Paige Cordero and Danaya Kinnard leading the way with NCAA provisional qualifying leaps. Cordero posted a season-best mark of 5.79m to claim the gold medal in the event, while Kinnard joined her on the podium in third place with a season-best leap of 5.74m. Redshirt juniors Madissyn Moore and Chelsea Howard also put forth season-best efforts of their own with Moore taking fourth place at 5.66m and Howard occupying fifth place at 5.61m. Sophomore Zane Bullock rounded out the scoring in the event with an eighth place finish at a mark of 5.53m.
  • Redshirt senior Caiden Macktinger made history in the men's pole vault as he broke the RMAC indoor championship meet and fieldhouse record in the event with a mark of 5.32m on his way to earning a gold medal in the event and scoring 10 points for the UCCS men's team. Macktinger's bar clearance also registered as a season-best provisional qualifying mark that will likely move him into the top five in NCAA Division II.
  • The Mountain Lions saw another fieldhouse record fall in the women's 5,000m race, where senior Anna Fauske added 10 points to the women's team total by racing to a gold medal time of 17:13.91. Her altitude adjusted time of 16:26.36 also registered as an NCAA provisional qualifying time, although it was just over 10 seconds shy of her season-best in the event. Redshirt sophomore Audrey Brunken and junior Kseniya Nikanorov also scored in the event with Brunken clocking a personal best converted time of 17:22.70 to claim seventh place and Nikanorov taking eighth place in an adjusted time of 17:34.60.
  • In what turned out to be an electric race on the outer track, the men's distance medley relay team consisting of Brett Davis, Peyton Nelson, Joseph Hamilton, and Jagger Zlotoff narrowly edged out Adams State for a gold medal in the event while breaking the fieldhouse record with a raw time of 10:03.50. In addition to scoring 10 points for the men's team, the UCCS DMR team's converted time of 9:42.37 went down as an improved NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.
  • 15 more points were pushed to the UCCS men's team in the men's long jump as redshirt senior Richard Safoh earned the individual event title with a NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 7.46m. Junior KJ McInnis finished just outside of the podium with a season-best provisional qualifying leap of 7.21m that placed him fourth overall in the competition.
  • In the women's weight throw, junior Savannah Jorgens made a late push with her final throw of the day elevating her into second place at a mark of 17.52m. Jorgens' toss registered as a season-best NCAA provisional qualifying mark and helped move eight points in the direction of the UCCS women's team. Redshirt junior Victoria Malaki also tossed a massive personal best in the event as she recorded a mark of 16.09m to finish sixth overall and score three points.
  • Junior Brooke Peterson and sophomore Phia Edwards teamed up to tally nine points for the women's team in the women's pole vault with Peterson posting a provisional qualifying mark of 3.78m to finish in a tie for third place and Edwards clearing a personal best bar height of 3.68m to earn a tied for fifth place.
  • The UCCS women's distance medley relay team of Rachel Richtman, Alyssa Lopez, Rachel Goodrich, and Molly Breuer handed the baton around the track for a converted NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:54.29 that was good for sixth place overall and three team points.
  • In the women's pentathlon, sophomore Lilyana Delagarza posted a personal best adjusted score of 3,070 points to finish seventh overall and score two team points. Throughout the pentathlon, Delagarza posted personal best marks in the 60m hurdles (10.44s), shot put (8.47m), and 800m (2:33.78) in addition to clearing 1.61m in the high jump and posting a leap of 5.06m in the long jump.
  • The Mountain Lions saw three student-athletes advance through the preliminary round of the men's 60m, including Safoh, senior Kymani Sterling, and junior Daryn Ofori-Kuragu. Safoh clocked the second-fastest time in the prelim field with a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.80s, while Sterling (6.85c) and Ofori-Kuragu (6.87c) qualified with the third and eighth quickest times in the field, respectively.
  • Sophomore Krissie Sanders had an impressive day on the track as she earned qualification to the final races of both the women's 60m hurdles and 400m dash. In the 60m hurdles, Sanders sprinted to a season-best NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.70c to claim the third-fastest time in the preliminary field. In the first round of the 400m dash, the second-year athlete recorded a massive personal best with a converted time of 57.41s that put her fourth in the prelim field.
  • Four student-athletes raced to qualifying times in the preliminary round of the men's 200m dash with junior Sebastien Jean clocking the fastest overall time in the field at a personal best converted mark of 21.68s. Ofori-Kuragu was the third overall finisher in the field with a converted time of 21.85s, while Sterling grabbed the fifth spot at an adjusted time of 21.90s and sophomore Luke Trinrud secured the eighth and final position at a converted mark of 22.11s.
  • Senior Victoria Farinas had a big day in the short sprints as she advanced through the prelims of both the women's 60m and 200m dashes. In the preliminary round of the women's 200m dash, Farinas galloped to a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 24.70s for the third-fastest time in the field. Earlier in the day, Farinas made her mark on the center lanes in the preliminary round of the women's 60m dash as she notched the fifth-fastest time at an NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 7.60.
  • In the preliminary round of men's 60m hurdles, sophomore Nigel James recorded the second-fastest time in the field with a converted NCAA provisional qualifying time 8.16s to advance to tomorrow's final.
  • Two student-athletes advanced through the preliminary round of the men's 400m dash with sophomore Ashton Whisler posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 48.02c for the third-fastest time in the field and junior Sebastien Jean claiming the fifth position with a converted time of 48.86s.
  • After one day of action in the men's heptathlon, the Mountain Lions have three student-athletes in scoring range as sophomore Evan Atkin holds down the top spot in the competition through the first four events with a score of 2,931 points. Redshirt senior Thorben Hast currently sits in third place with 2,787 points, while junior Dillon Arvayo is in seventh place with 2,634 points.

  • The Mountain Lions will continue their pursuit of the conference title tomorrow morning as the second and final day of the 2025 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will get underway at 9:45 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m hurdles. The women's high jump will be the first field event to get rolling at 10:30 a.m. while final races on the track will start at 12 p.m.
