Ignacio de La Vega recorded an even par 144 at the two-round NCAA West Regional Preview to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team. Dixie State University hosted the 27-team tournament Oct. 15-16 at the Ledges Golf Club in St. George, Utah. The Mountain Lions finished 26
th overall with a two-round score of 605.
Monday's opening round found the Mountain Lions tied for 24
th place overall (305). A frost delay Monday morning forced the first round to be postponed until Tuesday morning. After completing their final three holes of the first round this morning, UCCS carded a 300 in round two.
Chico State University took home the team title after notching a 25-under par 551. The top five teams finished under par (Chico State 551, Dixie State University 562, Simon Fraser 566, Colorado School of Mines 571, Oklahoma Christian U 573). Simon Fraser's Isaac Lee was the individual medalist with a 10-under 134.
De La Vega's 144 placed him in a tie for 27
th overall after the top 24 golfers shot under par. He led UCCS with seven birdies, including four in the first round, all of which came on the front nine.
Peter Johns tied for 89
th after carding a 151 (77, 74), including five birdies.
Jack Duguid also shot five birds and finished in a tie for 107 with a 154. Two strokes and 10 places behind Duguid was
Clay McCrory (156).
The Mountain Lions will compete in their final tournament of the fall season Oct. 22-23 at the CSU Monterey Bay Invitational.
