GUNNISON, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's indoor track & field teams claimed the inaugural Quad Meet trophy on Saturday, which was hosted by Western State.
The meet is set to be an annual competition against UCCS, Western State, Adams State, and West Texas A&M and will rotate among the four schools. It is also a unique scoring format as the men's and women's scores are combined.
The Mountain Lions saw the men's team score 45.5 points, edging Adams State by just a half a point. The women's team picked up 47.5, beating out Western State by four and a half points. Combined, UCCS earned 93 points as the hosts took second place with 83.5 points.
On the men's side, sprinter
LaChristopher Smith earned an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying in the 60m with a time of 6.83 second, taking second in the finals. The senior also placed second the 200m for the Mountain Lions.
In the pole vault,
Cameron Wright also earned a provisional mark of 4.80m, which placed him second overall in the competition.
Caleb Simons took first place in the 400m and the 4x400m relay that included Ryan Vomacka,
William Mayhew, and
Tristan Hinkley.
In the field events, William Ross won the triple jump with a leap of 14.06m.
On the women's side,
Kayla Zink earned a provisional time with her 7.54 seconds performance as she won the 60m finals. Fellow sprinter
Skylyn Webb also won her event, picking up a 400m provisional time of 56.66 seconds.
Jumpers Alexis Carol,
Heidi Beier, and
Hannah Meek took the top three spots in the triple jump for the Mountain Lions, earning 10 of a possible 11 points in the event.
The performances by both teams are notable as the men's team knocked off Adams State, who were ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll. On the women's side, UCCS was the only team not ranked in the poll as Adams State was ranked No. 2, West Texas A&M was No. 4, and Western State was No. 11.
The first regular season poll will be released on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Both men's and women's teams will be in action next weekend when they travel north to compete in the D2 Challenge, hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
