GUNNISON, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's track & field team opened the 2017 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with several athletes advancing out of their prelims on Sunday.
William Mayhew led the Mountain Lions in the 800m prelims by posting the fastest time in the qualifying races by crossing the finish line in an NCAA Disivion II provisional time of 1:51.07. His sea level time of 1:49.47 is an improvement on his qualifying mark by .85 of a second and unofficially moves him up to sixth in the national performance lists.
LaChristopher Smith won the third heat and placed third overall in the 100m prelims with a time of 10.70 seconds.
Fellow sprinter
Caleb Simons punched his ticket to the 400m finals after finishing with the sixth best time of 49.04 seconds.
The duo joined
Deshon Elcock and
Tristan Hinkley in the 4x100m relay prelims, taking second overall with a time of 40.96 seconds.
In the long jump,
DePree Kimber earned five points for UCCS in the long jump, taking fourth place with a season-best leap of 7.10m.
UCCS is back in action on Monday in Day 2 of the RMAC Championships with action starting at 9 a.m.
