SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's track and field team jumped three spots from the first day to finish fourth overall at the RMAC Championships on Saturday at Black Hills State.
The Mountain Lions scored a total of 63 points, missing out on third place by just two points. The team was predicted to finish eighth according to the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
UCCS saw freshman jumper
Will Ross win the triple jump after leaping 14.82m while
DePree Kimber placed fourth with a distance of 14.39m. Kimber also scored points in the long jump with a fourth place finish with a distance of 6.90m.
Other top performances in the field events included
Brenton Emmons and
Kyle Rex in the pole vault as the duo placed tied for seventh as they both cleared 4.47m. In the high jump,
Deshon Elcock took fourth place (1.96m).
On the track,
William Mayhew earned second place in the 800m as the sophomore edged third place finisher Levi Fried of Black Hills State by a mere six hundredths of second. Mayhew's time was 1:54.52.
In the sprints,
LaChristopher Smith tallied six points each in the 60m (6.85 seconds) and 200m (22.18 seconds) with a pair of third place finishes.
Caleb Simons took eighth in the 400m with a time of 51.88 seconds.
Hurdler
Matt Hanson was seventh in the 60m hurdles for the Mountain Lions, crossing the finish line in 8.53 seconds.
In the 4x400m relay, UCCS nearly earned enough points to finish the meet in third place, but finished with a time of 3:23.54, just behind Western State (3:23.46) to earn four points as they took fifth place in the event.
Adams State won the meet with a total score of 158 points, beating out Western State by 20 points. Colorado Mines rounded out the top three with 64 points.
