GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's indoor track & field team jumped five spots on the second day of action to finish second in the final standings in the Colorado Mines DII Invitational on Saturday.
UCCS finished the meet with a total of 108 points as Western State took the meet with 118.5 points.
On the track,
William Mayhew continued his stellar start to the season as the sophomore transfer recorded the eighth best time in Division II after finishing third overall with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:11.04 after being converted to altitude. Mayhew also ranks third in the nation in the 800m.
Fellow transfer
LaChristopher Smith won the 60m finals with a time of 6.82 seconds, edging out Western's Elijah Gilbert by five hundredths of a second.
In the heptathlon,
Kyle Rex finished second overall with a provisional qualifying score of 4,660, which is adjusted from 4,619 due to the smaller track.
In the 60m hurdles,
Matt Hanson placed fourth with a time of 8.55 seconds, just shy of the provisional qualifying time of 8.25 seconds.
Jumpers
Derek Valdez and
Deshon Elcock picked up points for the Mountain Lions in the high jump as the duo placed fifth and sixth overall as they each cleared 1.96m (6'5").
DePree Kimber placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.12m (43'0.5") on his final attempt.
Conor Bertles and
Sheldon Downs also scored in the shot put as Bertles placed sixth overall with a distance of 14.65m (48'1"). Downs took eighth with a throw of 14.18m (46'6.5").
UCCS is back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Colorado Indoor Invitational in Boulder.
