GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's indoor track & field team started out Colorado Mines' DII Invitational on Friday with sprinters
LaChristopher Smith and
Deshon Elcock leading the Mountain Lions.
The duo qualified for the 60m finals as Smith posted the top time in the prelims as he crossed the line in 6.85 seconds, which was three-hundredths of a second ahead of the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. Elcock took third place in the second heat with a time of 6.97 seconds.
Pole vaulter
Brenton Emmons earned three points for UCCS after clearing 4.66m (15'3.50"), which matches the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The height surpasses Emmons' previous best height of the season of 4.61m (15'1.5").
DePree Kimber placed second overall in the long jump for UCCS after leaping 7.01m.
Through four events in the heptathlon,
Kyle Rex sits in fourth place, totaling 2,506 points.
As a team, the Mountain Lions earned 13 points and sit in seventh place in their first scored meet of the season.
Competition continues Saturday in the 10-team meet inside Colorado Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
