SPEARFISH, S.D. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior
Chantelle Fondren finished as the runner-up in the 1,500-meter run as the Mountain Lions finished in a tie for ninth in the 2016 RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Black Hills State at Lyle Hare Stadium.
Molly Klotz earned All-RMAC Second Team honors in her fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
Fondren finished in 4 minutes, 36.23 seconds and lowered her NCAA provisional qualifying time down to 4:32.49. She improved by nearly five seconds from her time in the preliminaries on Friday and earned a spot on the All-RMAC First Team with the performance. Teammate
Marah Guzman placed No. 12 with 4:57.49 as the only freshman in the finals today.
Klotz placed fourth in a new personal best time of 1:01.00. She was three-tenths of a second away from second and improved her NCAA provisional qualifying time to 1:01.11 to account for the altitude. Klotz is No. 21 in the NCAA Division II performance lists with one week left to qualify. The NCAA accepted 20 hurdlers in the 2015 championships.
Klotz and Guzman joined
Chelsea Martus and Dana Shellhorn for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The team ran in 3:57.97 and cut more than three seconds off of the previous season-best for the relay team this season. Martus was eighth in the 800-meter run finals with 2:19.76 and
Makenzie Urban was No. 13 in the 5,000-meter run with 18:42.37. Urban's altitude-adjusted time of 18:24.69 was her best adjusted time of the season by more than two seconds.
The Mountain Lions scored 17 points and tied MSU Denver in he team standings.
UCCS will compete one more time before the deadline for NCAA qualifying performances on May 15 at the Colorado Mines Last Chance Meet in Golden, Colo.
