Fondren Makes Jump in DII 1500 Lists, Klotz Improves Again in Hurdles at Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior Chantelle Fondren improved by more than five seconds in the 1,500-meter run over the weekend and sophomore Molly Klotz set a new personal best in the 400-meter hurdles for the fourth straight meet as the Mountain Lions finished the regular season at the Colorado Mines Last Chance Meet at Stermole Track.

Fondren ran 4 minutes, 34.47 seconds, and won today's race by more than a 14-second margin. She improved to No. 12 in the NCAA Division II performance lists with an altitude-adjusted time of 4:27.11. While other race results are still pending across the nation, Fondren has a good chance of being selected for the national championships later this week based on her national ranking.

Klotz finished the hurdles in 1:00.45 and has improved on her personal best four times in the last 10 days. Her altitude-adjusted time of 1:00.56 moved her into No. 20 in the national performance lists. The NCAA accepted 20 hurdlers for last year's championships, but could take more or less depending on the number of student-athletes declaring in multiple events at the championships. Klotz could also move up the lists if qualifiers ahead of her opt not to compete at the national championships in the hurdlers, either because of injury or conflicts with other events.

Chelsea Martus finished the 800-meter run in 2:14.71 and Makenzie Urban ran her first 800-meter run of the season in 2:23.80. Asia Bastian ran her second-best 100-meter time of the season in 13.51 seconds and also crossed in 28.74 seconds for the 200-meter dash. Sam Bauer rounded out the Mountain Lions in action today with 5:12.10 in the 1,500-meter run.

Declarations for the national championships will be due by Monday afternoon, and the list of declared athletes will be released by the NCAA later on Monday. The NCAA will release the selections for the national championships by 4 p.m., on Tuesday, May 17, but could release the field sooner in the day. The NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place May 26-28 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
