Distance Medley Relay Finishes 11th at NCAA Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's distance medley relay team ran 11 minutes, 59.43 seconds to finish No. 11 at the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Robert W. Plaster Center. Melanie Diep, Chelsea Martus, Molly Klotz and Chantelle Fondren ran the relay for the Mountain Lions and finished one spot out of Second Team All-America honors.

Melanie Diep led off the relay in the 1,200-meter leg, and stayed in the top 10 after a small trip in the first minute. Diep was able to jump over a fallen runner a minute later, but the loss of momentum pushed her to the back of the field at the handoff to Chelsea Martus. Martus, Molly Klotz and Chantelle Fondren pulled the Mountain Lions up to No. 11.

The Mountain Lions finished second in the distance medley relay at the RMAC Indoor Championships two weeks with a program-record time. The No. 11 finish at the national championships matched the finish from the last time UCCS competed in the DMR at the national championships from the 2013 meet in Birmingham, Ala.
