GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships with a program-record time to win the event tonight at the Division II Invitational hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
Melanie Diep,
Chelsea Martus,
Molly Klotz and
Chantelle Fondren turned in a time of 12 minutes, 12.42 seconds.
Diep led off the relay and ran 3 minutes, 45 seconds on the 1,200-meter portion and put the Mountain Lions in the lead in her handoff to Martus. UCCS held the lead the rest of the relay as Martus ran 59.3 seconds in the 400-meter dash, Klotz ran 2:21 in the 800-meter run and Fondren finished with the mile in 5:05.
The time will unofficially adjust down to 11:47 and will mark a new UCCS program record by a four-second margin. The Mountain Lions led three teams that turned in national qualifying times for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
All four Mountain Lions will be back in action tomorrow, along with new runners, when the Division II Invitational resumes on Saturday morning.
