Southard Leads UCCS on Day One of Western N.M. Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Kyle Southard turned in scorecards of 73 and 71 to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team in both rounds of the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate today at the Golf Club of Estrella. The Mountain Lions improved two positions between the first and second rounds and was tied for No. 12 among 19 teams.

Southard made eight birdies in today's two rounds, and recorded his birdies on eight different holes between the rounds. His 71 in the afternoon matched his best round of the season and he is on pace for his best tournament of the year. Southard is tied for No. 17 in the individual results.

Patrick Skakel posted the second-best scores for the Mountain Lions in both rounds with a 74-73 performance today. He opened the second round with a birdie on hole 8 for the first of three birdies in the round. Stephen Cook made three birdies on the back nine in the second round for his 73 in the afternoon, a three-stroke improvement from the morning round.

Dustin Dalzell shot a 74 in his first round of the season, but an 82 in the second round provided Dylan Mitchell the opportunity to turn in the final Mountain Lion score of the afternoon with his 80.

UCCS is tied with Colorado Christian with a 36-hole score of 594 with a pair of 297 rounds. The Mountain Lions are two strokes behind Midwestern State and eight strokes behind three teams tied for eighth.

The third and final round will begin Tuesday at 8:15 a.m., MDT.
