Mountain Lions Second in Season-Opening Tournament

AMARILLO, Texas – Patrick Skakel led four Mountain Lion golfers who finished under par for the tournament as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs finished second in the season-opening Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational at West Texas. UCCS finished at 15-under par, two strokes behind Wayland Baptist.

Skakel finished at 6-under and shot a 71 in today's final round. He tied for No. 5 in the tournament. It's the second top-five finish in his career, and he improved his 54-hole career-best score by six strokes with a 210.

Stephen Cook led UCCS in the third round with a 69 and he finished with a three-round score of 214. His 2-under score tied him for No. 11 overall, one spot out of his fourth career top-10 finish.

Zach Tripp turned in the third Mountain Lion score of the round with a 70 and finished the tournament at 1-under. His 215 score over the three rounds was a new career-best for him by three strokes and his No. 11 finish was his best by two positions.

Kyle Southard shot 73 to round out the UCCS team score in today's round. He finished at 7-over with a tournament score of 223. Dylan Mitchell's score of 75 was outside of four scores counted for the Mountain Lions in the final round, but his 65 in yesterday's second round put him with a tournament score of 215 for 1-under. It was Mitchell's best tournament score in his career by 10 strokes.

UCCS shot 283 as a team in each of the three rounds. The Mountain Lions led the seven RMAC teams who competed and finished 25 strokes ahead of the next closest conference team.

The Mountain Lions will be in action against next week in the first RMAC event of the season hosted by Regis. Action will take place Sept. 22-23 at Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City, Colo.
