Box ScoreAUSTIN, Texas - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team ended its 2013-14 season at the Grey Rock Golf Club today with a seventh-place finish in the 2014 NCAA Division II West / South Central Regional Championships.
Joey Hearn tied for No. 31 overall over the 54-hole tournament to lead the Mountain Lions.
The Mountain Lions finished with a score of 307 for 19-over par in the third round and with a three-round score of 906 for 42-over. UCCS was two strokes behind Simon Fraser for the sixth position and a spot in the national tournament. The Mountain Lions entered the 20-team regional tournament as the No. 10 seed from the South Central Region and finished third among teams from the region and ahead of 12 teams ranked in the top 50 of the GolfStat national rankings.
Zach Tripp turned in the best score of the third round for the Mountain Lions with a 74 at 2-over. He recorded an eagle on hole 17 to help offset a double bogey on hole 10 and made the turn at 1-over. He birdied holes 1 and 2 to go as low as 1-under, but then moved to 3-over with four bogeys on a six-hole stretch. Tripp closed out the tournament with a birdie on hole 9 to finish with his lowest third round of the season.
Hearn recorded a consistent tournament with scores of 75, 76 and 76 in the three rounds and finished at 11-over par. He was the second team score for UCCS today and his three-round score matched his best tournament performance of the spring season.
Stephen Cook and
Patrick Skakel finished with rounds of 6-over and 7-over, respectively, to round out the UCCS score in today's round. Cook recorded two birdies in the third round and his best round of the tournament on holes one through nine. Skakel birdied hole two for the third straight day, but bogeyed on three of the last four holes of the round to finish at 2-over on holes one through nine.
UCCS finished the 2013-14 season with its 13th consecutive regional championship appearance with three returning golfers and no golfers that competed in the 2012-13 championship tournaments.
