Zach Tripp improved by 13 strokes from his opening round score and tied for the team lead with
Patrick Skakel in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships today at Grey Rock Golf Club. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs improved by one stroke but dropped to seventh in the 20-team tournament.
The Mountain Lions are two strokes behind sixth-place Chico State and four strokes behind fifth-place Hawaii-Hilo. The top six teams at the end of Wednesday's final round will advance to the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championships May 19-23 in Allendale, Mich.
Tripp's 13-stroke improvement was his largest between two rounds this season, and his 73 tied for his third-best round of the spring. He recorded birdies on holes 2 and 17 to match his performance on those holes from yesterday's round and finished 1-under par on holes 1 through 9.
Skakel was 2-under par through his first 12 holes of the round, but closed out his final six holes at 3-over to finish with a 73. He improved by four strokes from Monday's opening round and is eight strokes better through two rounds than his previous performance on the same course in March for the St. Edward's Invitational.
After a double bogey to start today's round,
Joey Hearn moved to as low as 1-over par and finished with a 76 for 4-over.
Dustin Dalzell shot even through holes one through nine and finished with 5-over on the round. He has the two-round lead for the Mountain Lions with a 149 (72-77) and is tied for No. 26 overall.
UCCS will tee off in the third and final round of the regional championships at 11:50 a.m., from hole 10. The Mountain Lions will be paired with golfers from Colorado Mines and UC San Diego.
