Patrick Skakel and
Kyle Southard led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team with scores of 77 to lead the Mountain Lions to a tie for No. 13 at the Otter Invitational hosted by California State-Monterey Bay at the Black Horse Golf Club. Ten of the 18 teams in the tournament, including UCCS, are national tournament participants within the past two seasons.
Skakel led the Mountain Lions with a 54-hole score of 231 for 15-over par. He finished his round with birdies on three of the last four holes, and continued his success on holes 8 and 10 with birdies in all three rounds. Skakel finished for No. 38 overall among the 97 golfers in the tournament.
Southard matched his best round of the tournament with today's 77 on consistent play with no worse than a bogey on any hole today. He finished in the top half of the field with a 235 for the tournament in an 8-stroke improvement from last week's tournament at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Stephen Cook and
Dylan Mitchell rounded out the Mountain Lion team score with rounds of 80 and 82, respectively. Cook cut seven strokes from his second round yesterday and Mitchell turned in his second-best round of the tournament.
The Mountain Lions tied California State-Stanislaus for No. 13, and the two teams finished three strokes behind No. 12 Hawaii-Hilo. Defending national runner-up Nova Southeastern won the tournament and defending national champion Barry finished fifth.
UCCS will be off until the start of the spring season in March. The Mountain Lions won the first RMAC event of the season on Sept. 22-23, finished second at the Palmer Foundation Invitational and the second RMAC event, and placed No. 10 at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate. UCCS recorded the best team and individual scores of the fall season at the Palmer Invitational with three team rounds of 5-under for a total of 15-under, Mitchell recorded the best single round with a 65 and Skakel recorded the best tournament with a 210 for 6-under.
