KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An unbeaten road trip in California, including a win and a draw, secured the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team No. 9 in the Week 3 United Soccer Coaches National Poll on Tuesday afternoon.
The Florida Institute of Technology retains the top sport on the national poll, extending its undefeated streak to five after a draw against No. 21 Nova Southeastern University. UCCS was the only Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) team to appear in this week's national rankings. Although the Mountain Lions were one of three schools to appear on the poll from the South-Central Region, including No. 3 Dallas Baptist University and No. 16 Texas Woman's University.
UCCS women's soccer opened their trip to California on Thursday night with a scoreless draw against California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. On Sunday, they headed south to grab a 2-0 victory against California State University, Chico.
The Mountain Lion's defense shined over the weekend, not conceding any goals and limiting their opponents to 2.5 shots on goal per game. Junior defender and Week 3 RMAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Malia Groshong contributed to the dominant defensive performance, as she played all 180 minutes this weekend. Also, Freshman
Lucy Kapranos earned two clean sheets this weekend, bringing her seasonal total to three. Offensively, Junior Forward
Brooke Pavlich scored her fifth goal of the season, tied third in the RMAC for goals. Taylyn Levi also scored what would be her third goal of the season against Chico State to seal the victory for the Mountain Lions.
The UCCS women's soccer team will open the RMAC season with two road games as they face Fort Lewis College on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. They will head to Gunnison, Colo. to play Western Colorado University for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 20.
