Mountain Lions Notch Third Shutout of Season in 2-0 Victory over Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team traveled to Chico, Calif., to take on Chico State University Sunday afternoon at CSU University Soccer Stadium. The No. 8 Mountain Lions offensive attack propelled them to a 2-0 victory over the Chico State Wildcats.

  • All-time Series: The Mountain Lions advance to 1-0-0 all-time over the Wildcats. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions' defense came out strong in the first half, applying pressure early and controlling the pace of play. Abby Stassi helped ignite the offense, recording the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. Her low shot to the left was saved by Chico State goalkeeper Charlotte Miller.
  • Chico State responded quickly, but Baylee Gregerson was unable to capitalize on an opportunity in the eighth minute of action, sending her shot high and wide.
  • Stassi continued the offensive pressure, earning another blocked opportunity. Stassi remained active in the attack and recorded another shot on goal in the 16th minute, but Chico State goalkeeper Charlotte Mailer saved her high-center attempt.
  • The Mountain Lions continued to create scoring opportunities as Elise Broberg recorded a shot on goal in the 34th minute. Mailer once again saved her low shot to the right.
  • With less than four minutes remaining in the half, UCCS' Brooke Pavlich broke through for the opening goal in the 42nd minute, finding the back of the net with a low shot to the left. The goal gave the Mountain Lions some breathing room and sent them into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
  • Chico State remained quiet offensively throughout the opening half, while the Mountain Lions maintained pressure and controlled the attack. UCCS outshot the Wildcats 5-2 in the first half.
  • UCCS continued to pull away from the Wildcats as Taylynn Levi scored in the 47th minute, sending a shot high to the right to extend the Mountain Lion's lead to 2-0.
  • The Wildcats struggled to maintain offensive pressure as the Mountain Lions continued to control the pace of play. 
  • Chico State had an opportunity to cut into the deficit in the 61st minute, but Yulisa Reyes sent her shot left.
  • UCCS' balanced offensive and defensive effort helped secure a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • The Mountain Lions held the advantage, out shooting the Wildcats 12-10 and led 8-3 in shots on goal over the Wildcats.  
  • Stassi led the game with four shots and three shots on goal.
  • 41st minute: UCCS junior Pavlich scored to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • 47th minute: UCCS senior Levi scored to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Freshman Lucy Kapranos secured her third career shutout victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Head coach J. B. Belzer notched his 400th career win Sunday afternoon.
  • Levi scored her third goal of the 2026 season.
  • Kapranos earned her third clean sheet of her collegiate career.
  • Stassi is now tied for 10th all-time in points for UCCS after her assist in the 42nd minute. 
  • Pavlich's goal was her third in the Mountain Lions' last four games.

  • No. 8 UCCS will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on the road against Fort Lewis College on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Durango, Colo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dirks Field.
