HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions got the scoring started in the top of the second inning, scoring four in the frame. Trevor Dale struck out leading off, but a passed ball on the third strike allowed him to reach first, with Brendan Killeen taking his spot on a fielder's choice that eliminated Dale at second base. Tyler Genrich worked a walk with both him and Killeen moving up ninety feet on a wild pitch. After a Cayden Gonzalez K, Rueben Velasco worked the second walk of the inning to load the bases, setting up Quinn Medin's two run single up the middle. Matthew Shipley kept I moving with an RBI single of his own, with Bryce Peterson following suit, but Shipley was thrown out at third trying to advance two bases, as UCCS grabbed the early 4-0 lead.
- The ThunderWolves got a pair back in the bottom of the second with a leadoff walk coming home on a one out triple. A second run followed two batters later on a groundout to short, with UCCS holding the 4-2 lead after two innings.
- An early pair of ThunderWolves hits would come back to haunt UCCS in the bottom of the third inning, as Jimmy Pelletier slashed a two-out single up the middle to score another pair, as UCCS and CSU Pueblo would head to the fourth knotted at four runs a side.
- A leadoff walk to Matthew Shipley would come into score on the single to left from Bryce Peterson, with both advancing an extra base on a fielding error in left. Brendan Killeen would bring home Peterson two batters later on his single to left, as UCCS restored their lead to two at 6-4.
- The ThunderWolves would pull back to even in the bottom of the seventh inning when two infield singles and a double plated another pair of runs, as the game headed for the eighth inning tied at six.
- James Harbison came on in the eighth inning and allowed a one-out baserunner on a hit-by-pitch but came back to get a groundout and a huge strikeout to end the inning.
- UCCS got it going quickly in the ninth with a one out single from Quinn Medin, before Matthew Shipley reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Bryce Peterson came up to deliver a huge base hit through the left side to allow Medin to the plate, with UCCS grabbing the late 7-6 lead. Nolan Oliver and Trevor Dale both went down on strikes to end the frame, but the Mountain Lions were in control in the middle of the 9th.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Liam Whalen came on and shut down the ThunderWolves three up-three down to end the game and give UCCS, at worst, the three seed in the RMAC tournament.
GAME STATISTICS
- Bryce Peterson went a dazzling 4-5 on the afternoon, with delivering the winning run as one of his two RBIs.
- Quinn Medin matched Peterson for the lead in RBIs on the day, both with two.
- James Harbison and Liam Whalen both delivered huge outings in relief, as each went a complete inning with two strikeouts.
- James Harbison (2-1) gets the win for UCCS as Liam Whalen picks up his fourth save. Jack Novak (1-6) suffers the loss.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- UCCS earns its 31st win of the season, setting a new program record for wins in a season.
- With today's win, UCCS clinches the third seed in the RMAC tournament, with the opportunity to the second seed still in play.
