Track & Field Adds Seven Provisional Qualifying Marks on Second Day of Jo Meaker Classic & Multi

CANYON, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field team wrapped up the second and final day of the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi on Friday with another impressive all-around performance as the men's and women's squads combined to add seven more NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions had four student-athletes finish the final five events of the men's decathlon on Friday and saw two of them record NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the event.
    • Junior Evan Atkin was the Mountain Lions' top finisher in the decathlon as he took fourth overall with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 6,863 points, matching his previous personal best in the event that entered the weekend ranked second all-time in program history. Atkin recorded a pair of PRs on the day in the 110m hurdles (14.86s) and pole vault (4.70m) while also notching marks of 30.45m in the discus throw, 35.75m in the javelin throw, and 5:42.50 in the 1500m.
    • Redshirt junior Broden Cahoon also hit the provisional qualifying standard in the event, claiming fifth place overall with a personal best score of 6,781 points. Cahoon started the day with a trio of personal best showings in the 110m hurdles (15.45s), discus throw (35.43m), and pole vault (4.10m) before finishing with marks of 41.59m in the javelin throw and 5:01.59 in the 1500m.
    • Freshman Luke Masterson finished his first decathlon with a score of 6,116 points, securing seventh place overall in the field. He opened the day with a personal best time of 15.98s in the 110m hurdles before posting marks of 29.96m in the discus throw, 4.40m in the pole vault, 24.30m in the javelin throw, and 5:04.58 in the 1500m.
    • Junior Spencer Shuler logged a ninth-place finish as he recorded a score of 6,034 points in his first decathlon at UCCS. Shuler ran a time of 15.36s in the 110m hurdles to open the day and finished with marks of 31.50m in the discus throw, 3.40m in the pole vault, 39.39m in the javelin throw, and 4:58.92 in the 1500m.
  • In the women's heptathlon, juniors Maylee Thompson and Lilyana Delagarza completed the final three events of the women's heptathlon as Thompson came away with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.
    • Thompson had an incredible finish to her heptathlon on Friday as she surged into third place overall with a personal best provisional qualifying score of 4,844 points. She kicked off day two with a huge personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 6.02m in the long jump and finished with PRs in the final two events, hitting a mark of 37.60m in the javelin throw and a time of 2:31.60 in the 800m run.
    • Delagarza closed the heptathlon in ninth place overall as she recorded a personal best score of 4,473 points, recording personal best marks in the long jump (5.49m) and 800m (2:25.71) to go along with a toss of 25.72m in the javelin throw.
  • Redshirt sophomore Josiah Billington put forth a huge effort in the men's long jump as he leapt to a personal best wind-aided NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7.67m for a third-place finish in the event. His best wind-legal jump of the afternoon came in at 7.64m, which still registered as a provisional qualifying mark and moved him into the top five on the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field performance list for the event, pending this weekend's remaining results.
  • Competing for the first time this outdoor season after spending the bulk of her year with the UCCS women's basketball team, junior Ayianna Johnson posted an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 45.86m in the women's discus throw as she earned a first place finish out of 13 competitors in the event. Redshirt junior Grace Solarin finished fifth overall in the event with a mark of 41.98m, while redshirt sophomore Casey Moran claimed ninth overall with a season-best mark of 38.33m and senior Savannah Jorgens took 10th place with a mark of 37.51m.
  • The Mountain Lions had a strong group of student-athletes competing in the women's long jump and freshman Jillian Hennessy led the way with a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.88m for a third-place finish in the 18-person field. Redshirt senior Chelsea Howard came up just one centimeter shy of the provisional qualifying standard as she posted a mark of 5.87m for a fourth-place finish, while junior Paige Cordero took ninth overall with a personal best leap of 5.75m.
  • UCCS closed the afternoon with a stellar performance in the women's 4x400m relay as junior Krissie Sanders, senior Abigail Frey, freshman Colette Bibeault, and Delagarza shattered the school record in the event by nearly three full seconds with a raw time of 3:45.84 that placed them first overall out of nine teams in the competition.
  • Fresh off a personal best in the 200m dash yesterday, junior Taryn Fettig added another PR to her ledger in the women's 100m on Friday as she sprinted to a converted time of 11.81s for a 13th place finish in the 53-person field. Freshman Katie Jewell secured an 18th place finish in the event as she clocked a personal best converted time of 11.96s, while junior Zane Bullock was just behind her in 19th place with a personal best converted time of 11.98s.
  • In the men's 100m dash, freshman Michael Ryan Cruzado matched his personal best in the event with a converted time of 10.50s as he claimed 11th place overall in the 60-person field. Freshman Noah Brown was the 15th overall finisher with a converted time of 10.57s, while junior Zamari Burrell took 18th place with a converted time of 10.62s.
  • A few hours prior to the open 100m dash competitions, the Mountain Lion sprinters competed in the men's and women's 4x100m relay races. The UCCS men's squad of Brown, Burrell, Cruzado, and Revano Plummer finished third overall out of nine teams with a converted time of 40.70s while the women's team consisting of Bullock, Fettig, Jewell, and Madissyn Moore finished sixth overall out of 11 teams with a converted time of 46.81s.
  • Junior Dallis Robinson logged a second-place finish in the women's high jump as she cleared 1.65m, while freshman Evelyn McClellan notched a clearance of 1.55m for a ninth-place finish. The Mountain Lions had three different student-athletes clear 1.93m in the men's high jump and, after sorting out the tiebreakers, redshirt senior Jake Hall finished tied for seventh with redshirt junior KJ McInnis and freshman Lyai Lyai finishing in a tie for tenth.
  • Just one day after shattering the men's hammer throw school record, senior Michael Roberts returned to the throws ring in the men's discus throw and posted a third-place finish in the event with a mark of 45.55m. Redshirt junior Kane Fobare finished just behind Roberts in fourth place with a personal best toss of 45.47m, while freshman Cam Bruns notched a personal best toss of 43.72m for an eighth-place finish and sophomore Joseph Bjegovich registered a season-best toss of 43.31m for a ninth-place finish.
  • Fobare and Bruns both returned to action later in the day in the men's shot put and posted nearly identical marks with Fobare finishing third overall in the 15-person field with a toss of 15.70m and Bruns taking fourth overall with a personal best toss of 15.68m. In the women's shot put, sophomore Jaedyn Kohn notched a season-best mark of 12.69m for a seventh-place finish in the 15-person field with Solarin finishing eighth overall at 12.53m, freshman Carley Malinowski taking ninth overall with a personal best toss of 12.14m, and Jorgens claiming 11th place with a mark of 12.07m.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • UCCS recorded updates to the top five lists in the outdoor record book for seven different events during Friday's competition, including the women's 100m, women's 4x400m relay, women's long jump, men's long jump, women's discus throw, women's heptathlon, and men's decathlon.
