HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The path to victory for the UCCS men's team went down to the wire on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Lions trailed Mines by just two points headed into the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay. With the potential title on the line, junior Sebastien Jean opened the relay with a blistering first leg, giving the baton to freshmen Peyton Nelson and Sean Donelson with a slight edge over the rest of field. When Donelson completed the third leg of the relay race and handed the baton to sophomore Ashton Whisler for the anchor leg, UCCS was in a tight battle with Adams State and CSU Pueblo for the lead with Mines sitting in fourth place just behind the group. Whisler managed to beat out all of his competition on the final leg of the race to earn a first-place finish for UCCS in the event with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:11.81 that was good for 10 points and vaulted the Mountain Lions into the team lead with Mines finishing fourth in relay and scoring only five points.
  • The Mountain Lions also had a huge performance in the men's 4x100m relay earlier in the day as senior Kymani Sterling, junior Daryn Ofori-Kuragu, Jean, and redshirt senior Donovan Mini carried the baton around the track in a season-best NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 40.06s for the first-place finish. The group's raw time of 39.94s registered as new facility record and an RMAC Outdoor Championship meet record.
  • Jean continued his incredible day in the open men's 400m as he shattered his own school record in the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 46.15s and cruised to a gold medal in the event. In addition to the 10 points scored by Jean, the rest of the Mountain Lions' 400m runners in the final combined to add 12 more points with Whisler posting a season-best NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 47.11s for a third place finish, Donelson taking fifth place in a personal best converted time of 48.13s, and Nelson finishing seventh with a converted time of 48.48s.
