COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team fell 11-4 and 18-7 to Colorado Mesa University during Saturday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
- The Mavericks scored quickly in the top of the first on an error followed by a double to right center field before starting pitcher Jacob Brown retired the next three batters in order to take a one run deficit into the bottom half. After going scoreless in their first two at bats, Brown and the Mountain Lions ran into some trouble in the top of the third when Mesa added two more to their lead on three hits and an error.
- With Joe McDermott pitching in relief of Brown down three runs in the fourth, the Mavericks posted four runs with no outs and tacked on two more before an inning ending double play to give CMU a nine-run lead halfway through.
- The Mountain Lions' offense broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning on a three-run blast off the bat of Tyler Buchman to cut Mesa's lead down to six heading into the fifth inning. After holding CMU scoreless for a second time, UCCS plated another run in the bottom of the fifth after a Mikey Brinton walk and a double to the left field fence by Kit Wigington to make it a 9-4 ballgame heading into the sixth inning.
- After both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning, CMU added on two more in the top of the seventh to go up 11-4 with the top of the order due up for the Mountain Lions. With three outs to play with, Brinton and Bryce Peterson both reached safely to start the bottom of the seventh, but a double play and a flyout ended the game as CMU earned the 11-4 victory.
GAME STATISTICS | GAME ONE
- Caleb Chance finished 2-3 with a run scored in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
- Tyler Buchman led the Mountain Lions in RBIs as he went 1-3 with a three-run home run
- Sage Ferguson (3-0) grabs the victory in 4.1 innings with four strikeouts, four walks, and one earned run.
- Jacob Brown (0-1) is charged with his first loss of the season, pitching three innings with two strikeouts, allowing three runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
- Much like the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, CMU jumped ahead early, tallying two runs off of starting pitcher Jamer Harbison in the top of the first inning on two hits. The Mountain Lions responded in the bottom of the first when Mikey Brinton homered on the first pitch thrown by Mesa's Ethan Voss before adding three more runs on four hits to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second.
- Colorado Mesa led off the second inning with a home run to right field off the bat of Stevenson Reynolds before the next three batters were retired to hold the score at 4-3. UCCS answered yet again in the bottom of the second inning when Hayden Iverson hit a three-run home run over the center field fence to increase their lead to four runs going into the third.
- After a scoreless third inning by both teams, the Mavericks added another in the fourth to make it a 7-4 game before Gerrit Erickson came out in relief with two outs and runners on the corners. The first batter reached safely on a hit by pitch to load the bases when the next batter, Cameron Cartwright, unloaded on a grand slam over the left center wall to take an 8-7 CMU lead. The Mountain Lions would threaten to score in the bottom half of the fourth but left two runners on to take a one run deficit into the fifth.
- Colorado Mesa would go on to score a plethora of runs in the final three innings tallying six, four, and three respectively, to make it a 21-7 ballgame. The Mountain Lions would score one more run on a home run to center field by Trevor Dale in the seventh as they drop game two 21-8.
GAME STATISTICS | GAME TWO
- Bryce Peterson went 3-5 at the plate and scored a run.
- Hayden Iverson led the team in RBIs with four on two hits.
- Andrew Pogue (2-0) tallies his second win of the season, pitching five innings with four strikeouts, four walks, and one earned run.
- Gerrit Erickson (0-1) tallies his first loss of the season, pitching one inning with a strikeout and a walk, along with four earned runs.

- UCCS will wrap up their home series against CMU tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 13 before traveling to CSM Darden Field in Golden, Colo. for a four-game series against Colorado School of Mines beginning on Thursday, Apr. 17 with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (MT).
