GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team put up a strong fight early, trailing 8-7 in the second quarter, but Colorado Mesa University pulled away to a 12-1 run to close out a 20-9 victory Friday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: CMU 7, UCCS 4
- Allie Schell connected with Rylie Maready in the game's opening minute to put the Mountain Lions up 1-0 early. CMU replied with four straight goals, but Peyton Ross slowed their momentum after retrieving a group ball and slinging it into the net to make the score 4-2. The Mavericks increased their point total to seven by the 2:36 mark, but Erica Rivera responded by collecting her 12th goal of the season with 50 seconds to go in the first, making it a CMU lead of 7-4 after 15 minutes of play.
SECOND QUARTER: CMU 5, UCCS 3
- The Mavericks opened the second quarter with an early goal, but Sofia Watts replied with her own at the 13:08 mark. Then, at 12:30 to go, Rivera picked up her second goal of the game with a free position shot, and thirty seconds later, Sarah Urbanic would score her 49th goal of the season, giving the Mountain Lions a deficit of just one (8-7). CMU closed the half with four straight goals unanswered, and UCCS was down 12-7 at the break.
THIRD QUARTER: CMU 3, UCCS 1
- After a Mavericks goal got things started in the second half, Emma Grace Martin and Sydnee-Anne Moeller connected for Moeller's 18th goal of the season. The Mountain Lions' defense allowed only two more goals in the remainder of the third quarter, but UCCS would be down 15-8 in the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: CMU 5, UCCS 1
- CMU opened the final frame with three straight goals, but Ross scored her second goal to make the score 18-9, Mavericks. CMU tacked on two more goals from there, winning 20-9.
FINAL SCORE: CMU 20, UCCS 9
GAME STATISTICS
- Rivera and Ross carried the load offensively, scoring two goals on two shots. Other Mountain Lions to record a goal include Urbanic, Moeller, Maready, Watts, and Lauren Schindlbeck.
- Mountain Lions goalkeepers Ellen Gernert and Jordyn Nunez each allowed 10 goals today. Gernert was in goal for 36 minutes and 39 seconds, collecting four saves, while Nunez was in goal for 23 minutes and 21 seconds while collecting three saves.
- The Mavericks outshot the Mountain Lions 36-26 and had more shots on goal (27-18). CMU also had more saves (9-7), more assists (12-4), and ground balls collected (19-14).
- UCCS tallied 14 ground balls in the game, with Meghan Weiss leading the effort with four, while Gernert and Jade Wilson added three apiece.
- Despite tonight's losing effort, the Mountain Lions forced more turnovers (13) than they surrendered (11).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Mavericks scored 20 goals today, the most goals allowed by the Mountain Lions in a game this season.
- Urbanic attempted 10 shots in today's loss, which brings her to 99 shot attempts this season. This is the second-most shot attempts in a season in program history, behind Vanessa Nelson, who attempted 109 in 2018.
