HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: NMSU 4, UCCS 2
- Missouri Western State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game before UCCS put a goal on the scoreboard. A save from the Mountain Lions' goalie Jordyn Nunez turned into a score as Peyton Ross laid in a 15-yard pass to Emma Grace Martin to the left of the Griffons cage to score UCCS' first goal of the game. Martin struck again, this time on a free-position goal to bring UCCS back within one score, 3-2, but the home team was able to convert on a free-position attempt with 3.6 seconds left in the opening stanza.
SECOND QUARTER: UCCS 3, NMSU 3
- The Mountain Lions went into a three-goal deficit before Martin recorded her third straight goal of the game after working around the perimeter from to right and firing in a shot from eight yards out. A dropped ball from the Griffons near UCCS' goal turned into two straight goals for the Mountain Lions after Sarah Urbanic found Watts at 8:38. After the home team's sixth goal of the contest, Ross won the draw control that eventually led to Urbanic putting the ball into the back of net, bringing UCCS back within one goal, 6-5. MWSU tacked on one more goal before the half, taking a 7-5 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER: UCCS 6, NMSU 3,
- The Mountain Lions faced another three-goal hole in the third period but fought back to net goals from Watts and Sydnee-Anne Moeller. Watts's free-position shot was saved, but Urbanic picked up the ground ball, which led to Watts hitting her second goal of the game. Lined up center on from the goal in the free-position, Moeller's goal chipped into the Griffons lead, 8-7, before Watts posted a hat trick to tie the game at eight-all. With an extra player on the field, Watts tied the game again for her third point of the contest before Watts gave UCCS their first, 10-9, with 4:21 left in the quarter. The Griffons' game-tying goal was short-lived after Moeller won the draw control while Martin finished the play, driving the left baseline and putting the ball between the goals for an 11-10 UCCS lead with 1:59 remaining.
FOURTH QUARTER: NMSU 5, UCCS 4
- UCCS' 11-10 lead to start the final quarter was swallowed up when the Griffons netted a player-down and two straight player-up goals. Trailing 14-12, UCCS mounted a comeback with a 3-0 run to retake the lead, 15-14, with 58 ticks left in regulation. The Griffons pushed the game to overtime on a goal from Maleah Sosa with 24 seconds remaining.
OVERTIME: UCCS 1, NMSU 0
- Martin sealed the Mountain Lions' first overtime win of the season on a free-position goal with just 1:29 left in the first overtime period.
FINAL SCORE: UCCS 16, NMSU 15
