HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first inning started just how the Mountain Lions wanted, as starting pitcher, Jason Fink, faced the minimum at the top of the inning before the offense got started on a double over the head of the center fielder by Mikey Brinton. Looking to go up, the next two UCCS batters advanced Brinton on flyouts to go up 1-0. After a clean top of the second, the Mountain Lions answered with yet another run in by way of the long ball off the bat of Nolan Oliver to take a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
- After retiring the side in the top of the third inning, UCCS added yet another run as designated hitter Kit Wigington sent a ball over the left center fence to take a three run lead into the fourth. The Mountain Lions finally strung some hits together in the bottom of the fourth as they tallied five to put up four more runs and go up 7-0.
- Fink ran into some trouble in the fifth and sixth innings, allowing three runs with a two-run homerun in the fifth. After limiting the Grizzlies to just three runs, the Mountain Lions put up three of their own in the bottom of the sixth when Wigington and Hayden Iverson hit back-to-back doubles to score one before singles by Trevor Dale and Nolan Oliver scored the next two to take a 10-3 lead into the seventh inning.
- After James Harbison came in for Fink in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced, Brinton led off the bottom of the inning with a hard-hit triple to right center. Bryce Peterson would then come up with a runner in scoring position and hit a sharp double down the left field line to go up 11-3 heading into the eighth inning.
- The Mountain Lions tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning after retiring the side in the top half when senior outfielder Dillon Vroman launched a home run to right center with a runner on second for his first long ball of the season. Senior pitcher Colton Trudeau came in for the top of the ninth inning and immediately ran into trouble as the first three batters all reached safely and scored to move the score to 11-6. Trudeau would go on to strike out the final two batters to give the Mountain Lions the victory before any more damage could be done.
