HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions put together a strong start to their season-opener in the women's pole vault as freshman Colette Bibeault and senior Brooke Peterson claimed the top two spots in the competition with identical NCAA provisional qualifying marks of 3.72m. Making her collegiate debut, Bibeault earned a first place nod in the six-person field by virtue of clearing each of her first three bar heights on the opening attempt before missing all three tries at the final height (3.87m), while Peterson secured a second place finish with one early miss before also missing all three attempts at the final bar.
- UCCS added four more NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the women's long jump with redshirt senior Chelsea Howard notching a personal best leap of 5.86m that placed her second overall in the field of 20 jumpers. Redshirt senior Madissyn Moore, junior Maylee Thompson, and freshman Jillian Hennessy also reached the provisional qualifying threshold with Moore and Thompson filling the third and fourth place spots in the competition with matching leaps of 5.78m and Hennessy posting a fifth-place mark of 5.73m in her first collegiate long jump competition. The Mountain Lions also had a pair of student-athletes come up just shy of the provisional qualifying threshold in the event as junior Zane Bullock registered a personal best mark of 5.69m for a sixth-place finish and sophomore Payton Rodgers posted a personal best leap of 5.61m to take seventh place.
- Freshman Jayden Nohr led a group of eight UCCS student-athletes competing in the men's long jump as he put forth an impressive showing in his collegiate debut, posting an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 7.32m to finish second overall in the field of 12 jumpers. Senior Broden Cahoon earned a third-place finish in the event with a mark of 7.04m, while senior Willie Tran also surpassed the seven-meter mark with a fourth-place leap of 7.01m.
- A pair of Mountain Lions notched NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the men's shot put as senior Kyle Demos finished second overall in the competition with a mark of 16.53m and senior Kane Fobare claimed third place with a personal best toss of 16.47m. Freshman Cam Bruns also made his collegiate debut in the event and put forth a solid effort, finishing fifth out of 14 competitors with a mark of 15.91m.
- The Mountain Lions filled up the top five positions in the 13-person field for the women's shot put with senior Savannah Jorgens finishing first overall among the group with a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 13.66m. Jorgens was followed in the event standings by redshirt junior Bailey Young in second place with a mark of 13.16m, freshman Carley Malinowski in third place with a toss of 12.75m, redshirt junior Grace Solarin in fourth place with a mark of 12.59m, and sophomore Jaedyn Kohn in fifth place with a personal best throw of 12.49m.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
- In their season-opener, the Mountain Lions posted updates to the top five list in the indoor record book for three different events, including the women's pole vault, men's shot put, and women's shot put.
- With Peterson and Bibeault both posting NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the women's pole vault with their performances today, they become the first female Mountain Lion duo to reach the provisional threshold in the same season since the 2011-12 indoor season when Alex Colvin and Christy Carmody achieved the feat.
