Groshong Week 5 DPOTW

Groshong Earns Second Career Defensive Player of the Week Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team continued their success in week five with center-back Malia Groshong earning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Defensive Player of the Week award.

Groshong and the Mountain Lions displayed exceptional defensive output this weekend as they went 1-0-1 with a scoreless draw at Colorado Christian, and a 4-1 victory at MSU Denver.

Groshong, a captain of the program and the coordinating defender in the middle of the backline led the defensive effort for the Mountain Lions in Week 5, as the Mountain Lions did not allow Colorado Christian to record an offensive statistic on Friday morning in Lakewood. CCU's possession in the final quadrant of the pitch was just 7% as UCCS held the ball for 73% of the match, with only 28% of that total being in their own half.

The Mountain Lions continued their defensive dominance in the final match of the weekend at MSU Denver, where they handled the Roadrunners in a 4-1 victory. The Roadrunners goal was their only shot on goal, and only shot attempted in the match, bringing UCCS to only one shot allowed between their two matches played on the weekend. The near perfect defensive effort earned Groshong her second Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career.

The Mountain Lions return home this week to host Black Hills State on Friday at 11 a.m. before closing week six on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Regis University at Mountain Lion Stadium.
