HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a matchup featuring a pair of top 25 nationally ranked programs, the Mountain Lions and Skyhawks did not disappoint as they exchanged momentum throughout a tightly contested first half. UCCS generated multiple quality chances with a flurry of shots and corner kick opportunities early in the period, but it was Fort Lewis that capitalized on one of their best chances of the half in the 43rd minute as their defense turned away a long throw in attempt by Miles Seminario and played the ball out to Lorenz Guintini, who collected the ball around midfield with just a single defender in front of him and eventually sent a strike into the back of the nylon to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage.
  • As the Mountain Lions began their search for an equalizer in the final minutes of the first half, Seminario found a pair of shot attempts but saw one of them sail off target with the other being saved by FLC goalkeeper Lucas Martin as the Skyhawks carried their one-goal lead into the halftime break.
  • UCCS endured a bevy of pressure from Fort Lewis coming out of the intermission as they had a trio of solid shot attempts in the first 15 minutes of the period, including a strike that banged off the crossbar in the 49th minute off the foot of Yohan Fila. In the 61st minute, FLC midfielder Quinn Bosanko took the ball away from the UCCS defense in the attacking third and sent a low liner into the left side of the frame from 25-yards out to extend the Skyhawks lead to 2-0.
  • The Mountain Lions saw their fortunes change in the 73rd minute when they were awarded their 11th corner of the match. Gael Hernandez took the corner for UCCS and sent a curving left-footed ball into the box that was redirected by Aidan Harris and ultimately fired into the bottom left corner of the frame by Cole Wearner to cut the UCCS deficit to 2-1.
  • Despite still trailing by a goal, UCCS faced plenty of pressure from the Fort Lewis offense down the stretch as the Skyhawks unleashed eight shot attempts across the final 15 minutes of the match and saw their eighth shot go into the back of the net off the foot of Raul Baptista Filipe in the 89th minute to push the score to 3-1.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • The Skyhawks held the advantage in total shots (20-12) and shots on goal (9-3), but UCCS had a decisive advantage with 12 corner kicks to just two for Fort Lewis.
  • Wearner scored his first collegiate goal on his lone shot of the evening, while Harris and Hernandez both recorded their first assists of the season.
  • Seminario paced the team with four total shots and two shots on goal, while Eduardo Macias and Cameron Radeke each recorded a pair of shots.
  • Hugo Sjöberg drew his 13th start of the season in frame and made a season-high six saves while allowing three goals in 90 minutes of action.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Thursday evening's match marked the first time this season that the Mountain Lions have allowed more than two goals in a single game as they surrendered season-highs in shots (20) and shots on goal).
  • With two shots on goal in tonight's match, Seminario now has 50 in his career and sits No. 10 all-time in program history for the category.
