HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marko Sipila started Friday evenings game by forcing a flyout, striking out a batter looking, and getting the third out after Evan Steinberger threw out a runner trying to steal second base. UCCS had a quiet first inning, going three-up three-down.
- Sipila produced another clean inning in the second and the Mountain Lions threatened to score first after Caleb Stubbings drew a walk followed by Steinberger who singled to center field. UCCS was unable to score with runners on second and third with one out and would go into the third tied 0-0.
- The Mavericks tacked across the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly and an error in the top of the third inning, but the Mountain Lions responded with a sacrifice fly of their own as Stubbings drove in Hayden Iverson to notched it up at one.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth and runners on first and second, Iverson sent one over the right field fence to give UCCS a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. CMU tallied on two more in the top of the fifth, but Sipila kept them from tying it up.
- After a silent bottom of the fifth from the Mountain Lions, Sipila worked himself out of a first and third jam by striking out Kennedy Hara on a sweeping slider to keep UCCS up 4-3.
- The Mavericks fourth time around the lineup saw them heat up as they scored three runs on three hits to take a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning. Jordan Pace came in for relief for CMU and struck out three Mountain Lions in the bottom half of the seventh.
- CMU scored another run in the eighth to go up four (8-4) and UCCS failed to scratch any runs against Pace and were down to their last three outs. The Mavericks added another three runs in the ninth and went on to close it out at 11-4.
