Lacrosse Overpowered by No. 7 Regis, 13-3

DENVER, Colo. – Taking on the seventh ranked team in NCAA Division II on their home field, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team was overpowered by Regis University in Denver, Colo. Friday night, 13-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: RU 4, UCCS 0
  • No. 7 Regis University wasted no time on their home turf as Maggie Schipfer scored on the first possession of the game just 47 seconds from the opening draw.  Gabby Rothermund added a free-position goal to put Regis up 3-0 before Bailey Truex scored with just 12 ticks left in the first quarter for a 4-0 home team lead.  All three of the Mountain Lions shots in the period were on frame and came at the hands of Allie Schell, Erica Rivera and Brielle Fannin.
SECOND QUARTER: RU 4, UCCS 1
  • Shea Murphy and Schipfer added two more goals on the scoreboard for Regis, finding the back of the net on the Rangers first two possessions of the second stanza.  Another pair of goals from Regis gave the blue and gold an 8-0 lead, but Erica Rivera stopped the scoring spree with 4:23 left in the first half.  Starting the action on a free-position set play, Emma Grace Martin chiseled a pass from behind the net to Rivera who fired in a shot from four meters front and center of the goal to put the black and gold on the scoreboard.
THIRD QUARTER: RU 3, UCCS 0
  • The Rangers lead grew to 10 goals after three quarters of action, 11-1, with Lily Ferguson netting a deuce of goals.  Sarah Urbanic and Brennan Kelly fired off two shots in the third quarter with Urbanic's goal counting for UCCS' sixth shot on goal of the game.
FOURTH QUARTER: RU 2, UCCS 2
  • Two straight goals from RU's Becky Goetsch pushed the Rangers lead to 13-1 with nine minutes left in regulation.  After an assist in the second quarter, Martin notched a goal to her stat line with a free position goal at 6:00, cutting Regis' lead down to 11 goals, 13-2.  Julia Patrick joined in the scoring action for UCCS, hitting a free-position shot on her second shot attempt of the game with 2:58 left on the clock, but the Rangers kept the lead to remain undefeated in conference play with a 13-3 win.
FINAL SCORE: RU 13, UCCS 3
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Martin paced the Mountain Lions offense with a goal and an assist.
  • Rivera and Patrick each added a score and two shots.
  • On the defensive end of the field, Meghan Weiss posted a team-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • Regis' Goetsch led both teams with three goals.
  • UCCS snagged 16 ground balls, won six draws and were successful on 17-of-23 clears.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Rivera's goal in the second quarter ended more than an 18-minute scoring drought for UCCS.
  • Patrick has now scored at least one goal in 26 consecutive games.
  • The last time UCCS was held to three or fewer goals was Feb. 25, 2023 at Assumption.
