Mountain Lion Distance Runners Impress on Day Two of California Trip

AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field team received an impressive showing from their men's and women's distance runners on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Leopard Distance Carnival as they combined to record five NCAA provisional qualifying marks and tally multiple outdoor record book updates.

HOW IT HAPPENED | BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL
  • Junior Logan Cole got the action started bright and early for the Mountain Lions on Friday as he competed in the open section of the men's 10,000m race at 7 a.m. local time. Despite the early gun, Cole put together a lifetime best race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 30:15.86 that was good for 19th place in the field of 46 runners and moved him into fifth-place all-time in UCCS outdoor program history for the event.
  • In the women's 800m dash open section, senior Kate Hedlund paced the Mountain Lions as she raced to an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:11.20 to secure 40th place in the field of 238 runners. Redshirt senior Ashten Loeks was also in competition in the 800m open section as she finished in 129th place while besting her personal record in the event by more than two seconds with a time of 2:15.01.
  • Junior Joseph Hamilton had a personal best effort in the open section of the men's 800m dash as he clocked a time of 1:52.04 to finish in – place out of – competitors. His time also moved him into fourth-place all-time in UCCS men's outdoor program history for the event.
  • Competing in heat 3 of the Open A section of the women's 5,000m, junior Anna Fauske put together a career-best race as she clocked a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:18.24 to finish fifth overall in the heat. Fauske's time shattered Layla Almasri's previous school record (16:31.42) in the event by more than 13 seconds.
  • The Mountain Lions also had a pair of women's throwers in action on Friday as redshirt senior Anna Holland recorded a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.21m and junior Victoria Malaki finished 18th overall in the discus throw with a toss of 41.50m.
HOW IT HAPPENED | LEOPARD DISTANCE CARNIVAL
  • UCCS had a pair of women's student-athletes competing in the 3,000m steeplechase across town at Ortmayer Stadium on the campus of the University of La Verne and saw both easily surpass the NCAA provisional qualifying threshold for the event. Redshirt sophomore Molly Breuer posted a massive personal best as she cleared her previous PR by more than 30 seconds with a time of 10:42.36 that was good for first place overall in the field of 43 runners. Senior Nadine Almasri also recorded a significant personal best in the event as she crossed the line in 10:52.69 to claim fifth place overall. The Mountain Lion duo of Breuer and Almasri rewrote the program record book for the 3,000m steeplechase as Breuer now ranks second all-time for the event and Almasri sits fourth all-time.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • The Mountain Lions posted record book updates in three different events on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Leopard Distance Carnival, including the men's 800m, women's 5,000m, women's 3,000m steeplechase, and men's 10,000m.
