Lacrosse’s Strong Start Fades in Second Half to No. 10 Regis, 19-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team started hot Sunday morning against No. 10 Regis University in the season-opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest.  The Mountain Lions led for most of the first quarter, but the Rangers took control in the second half, outscoring UCCS 12-3 as the Mountain Lions fell at home, 19-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: UCCS 3, REGIS 3
  • Brielle Fannin picked up a ground ball of Sarah Urbanic's shot attempt and assisted Emma Grace Martin for the first goal of the game.  Thirty-eight seconds later the Mountain Lions lead went to 2-0 as Fannin converted on a free-position goal for her sixth goal of the season.  Regis scored twice in 30 seconds to knot the game at 2-2, but Julia Patrick's first goal of the game came with 52 seconds left to give the home team the lead back, 3-2.  The Mountain Lions received a yellow card and the Rangers took advantage, scoring a player-up goal with 28 ticks left in the first quarter to tie the game for the second time, 3-3.
SECOND QUARTER: REGIS 4, UCCS 3
  • The Mountain Lions returned the favor as Patrick scored a player-up goal just 22 seconds into the second period for UCCS' third lead of the game, 4-3. The blue and gold went on a little run, netting four straight goals to take their first lead of the game, 7-4.  Down by three goals, the Mountain Lions called a timeout that led to two goals from Patrick and Martin, cutting into the Rangers lead at the half, 7-6.
THIRD QUARTER: REGIS 7, UCCS 1
  • Regis controlled the second half as they rattled off seven goals and nearly held UCCS without a score in the third period, but Patrick converted on a free-position shot with three seconds left in the third stanza, bringing UCCS within seven goals, 14-7.
FOURTH QUARTER: REGIS 5, UCCS 2
  • The No. 10 Rangers kept the pressure on UCCS, outscoring the Mountain Lions 5-2 in the final stanza.  Patrick and Peyton Ross found the back of the net in the final five and a half minutes, but UCCS came up short, 19-9.
FINAL SCORE: REGIS 19, UCCS 9
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Four different Mountain Lions put the ball in the cage with Patrick netting a game high five goals and seven shots (seven shots on goal).
  • Martin chipped in two goals and Fannin and Ross each added one score.
  • Jessie Ackerman and Madison McGriff each picked up four ground balls.
  • Rivera finished the game with a team high four draw controls and added three ground balls, two shots and a caused turnover.
  • McGriff tallied 11 saves and a .367 save percentage in her sixth game between the posts this season.
  • Maggie Schipfer paced Regis with four goals, an assist, seven shots and three ground balls.
  • Megan Bunker accounted for 16 of Regis' 20 draw controls and she added two goals and an assist.
  • The Mountain Lions were successful on 15-of-21 clears and picked up 24 ground balls while winning 11-of-31 draws.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Patrick's five goals, seven shots on goal and seven shot attempts (tied) are the most this season by any Mountain Lion.
  • McGriff's four ground balls today ties her for the most all-time with Ellie O'Brien (169 ground balls).
  • Patrick has recorded 29 multiple-goal games in her career, including 19 hat tricks.  She is just 10 goals shy of becoming the all-time leader in goals, netting 115 goals in four seasons.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will remain at home this week when they take on Fort Lewis College on March 28 at 4 p.m., followed by Saturday's 1 p.m. contest against Colorado State University Pueblo.
