COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman
Krissie Sanders of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's track & field team has been named the Week 1 RMAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week after notching a strong outing at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invite on March 16.
A first-year member of the Mountain Lion track & field program, Sanders collects the first weekly conference award of her collegiate career and the first of the outdoor season for UCCS.
Sanders made a splash in her collegiate outdoor debut in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles as she went on to post top-two finishes in both events on Saturday at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invite. Sanders began her day in the women's 100m hurdles, where she clocked a wind-aided, converted time of 14.47s to earn a second-place finish in the event. Her raw time of 14.43s also moved her into a tie for third all-time in program history for the event. Just about two hours later, Sanders returned to the track in the women's 400m hurdles, and she proceeded to earn a convincing event win by nearly a full second with a converted time of 1:02.54. Her converted time wound up being just two-tenths of a second shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying threshold for the event (1:02.36), while her raw time of 1:02.43 registered as the second-fastest time in UCCS program history.
Sanders and the Mountain Lions are set to travel back to the campus of Colorado State University Pueblo this weekend to compete at the Spank Blasing Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.
