Baseball Halts Losing Streak, Downs St. Cloud State 11-5

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team snap their seven game slide as they pick up the 11-5 victory over St. Cloud State University Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP
  • Final Score: UCCS 11, SCSU 5
  • Records: UCCS (3-10, 0-0 RMAC) | CSUP (5-6, 4-0 NISC)
  • Facility | Location: Mountain Lion Park | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions hold a 2-1 record over the Huskies in the three games between the programs historically.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Huskies took advantage of a shaky first inning from Marko Sipila, earning four straight hits to start the game. Drew Beier led off with a single, followed by a Cal James double to put the runners on the corners. Sawyer Smith kept the line moving with a two run double that opened the scoring, then Ben Clapp singled Smith home to bring the lead to 3-0. Sipila then responded with three straight strikeouts to end the inning and limit the damage to three.
  • UCCS wouldn't waste any time responding, as they got straight to work in the bottom of the second inning. Arron Jenkins broke the ice with a lead off walk, which set up Evan Steinberger who blasted a two-run shot to cut the lead to just a run. Tyler Richardson followed Steinberger with a single, creating the opportunity for Hayden Iverson who smashed a fastball off the top of the scoreboard in left center field for the second two run trot of the inning, giving UCCS the 4-3 advantage.
  • Cal James led off the top of the third with a solo home run that pulled the Huskies back even, but as the game began to look like it may turn into a track meet, Sipila buckled down on the mound to get out of the inning with just the one run surrendered.
  • St. Cloud tacked on a fifth run in the fourth inning on a Cal James sacrifice fly that plated Blaine Guthrie to give the visitors back the one run lead halfway through the contest.
  • UCCS went back to work offensively in the bottom half of the fourth, with Caleb Chance and Kit Wigington both slashing RBI singles, returning the Mountain Lions the lead, which they would not relinquish.
  • Down the stretch, UCCS would add three runs in the sixth innings off hits from Hayden Iverson and Alec Gomez, having Wigington sacrifice himself on a ground out for a third run in the frame.
  • Tyler Richardson launched the third homer of the day for UCCS, earning his first of the year to push the lead to five.
  • Alec Gomez put the finishing touches on the offense in the eighth on a sac fly to deep right to bring Caleb Chance across, and Joe McDermott shut the door on the mound tossing two hitless innings to give UCCS their first win since February 8th.
