Men’s Cross Country Places 15th at NCAA DII Championship

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Following a week long storm and running in exceptionally wet conditions, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's cross country team finished 15th overall with 435 points Saturday morning at the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championship meet.  The 34-team meet featured more than 250 of the top runners in Division II was held in Sacramento, Calif. at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course.

AROUND THE COURSE
  • Enzo Knapp was the first Mountain Lion to cross the finish line, boasting a personal best 10k time of 31:01.3 for a 67th place finish.
  • Jagger Zlotoff was just 10 seconds behind Knapp in 82nd place with a time of 31:11.2.  Only 10 seconds separated Zlotoff and Brett Davis, who posted a 99th place finish in 31:21.5
  • Joseph Impellitteri was the fourth Mountain Lion to score for UCCS, clocking a time of 31:33.9 to place 126th overall.  Ten spots and eight seconds behind Impellitteri was Caden Leal in 136th place (31:41.1).
  • Bringing in the Mountain Lions squad were Jack Donze (31:57.0) in 159th place and Koy Cunningham in 181st place (32:15.5).
                       
RACE LEADERS
  • William Amponsah of West Texas A&M won his second straight NCAA national championship title in a time of 29:40.8, besting all 259 competitors.
  • Colorado School of Mines edged Wingate University by three points.  The Orediggers claimed 63 points as Wingate, the No. 1 ranked team all season, finished with 66 points.

BEYOND THE FINISH LINE
  • Saturday was the first time this season Knapp finished first among the Mountain Lions.
  • Five Mountain Lions ran personal best 10k times today.  Joining Knapp with PR times are Davis (32:21.5), Impellitteri (31:33.9), Leal (31:41.1) and Cunningham (32:15.5).
  • Today was Zlotoff's third straight national championship race, and the second for Davis, Donze and Impellitteri.  Representing the Mountain Lions for the first time at a national championship were Knapp, Leal and Cunningham.
 
UP NEXT
  • With the cross country season now complete, the Mountain Lions will open the indoor track and field season Dec. 6-7 at Colorado School of Mines.
