No. 4 Women’s Cross Country Dominates Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Behind all five scorers finishing in the top 11, the fourth ranked University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team won the 2023 UCCS Rust Buster meet Saturday morning. The Mountain Lions tallied 28 points in the six-team season opening race.
 
INSIDE THE UCCS RUST BUSTER
  • Course | Location: Monument Valley Park | Colorado Springs, Colo.

AROUND THE COURSE
  • Anna Fauske ran to a first-place finish on the 5k course with a time of 17:38.72, seven seconds faster than teammate Kate Hedlund's runner-up finish.
  • Finishing in back-to-back spots were Molly Breuer (18:18.28) and Rachel Richtman (18:22.32) who placed seventh and eighth overall, respectively.
  • Earning 10 points and finishing 11th was Rachel Goodrich who matched her career best 5k time of 18:26.
                       
RACE LEADERS
  • Today's individual win is the first Rust Buster race win for Anna Fauske.
  • As a team, UCCS picked up 28 points to win the race, keeping ahead of Colorado State University Pueblo's 35 points.  MSU Denver registered a third place with 86 points, followed by Colorado College (110 points), New Mexico Highlands University (143 points) and Regis University (166 points).
 
BEYOND THE FINISH LINE
  • Debuting for the Mountain Lions this morning were Abby Bartel, Audrey Brunken (17th place, 18:51.75), Madison Chavez (23rd place, 19:33.70), Kaya Pillivant (36th place, 20:26.37) and Maddie Ruszkiewicz (22nd place, 19:15.14).
  • Nadine Almasri (19th place, 18:57.40) and Kelsey Graff (14th place, 18:33.73) both clocked career best 5k times.
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions have now won the UCCS Rust Buster for the fourth straight year.  Fauske become the fourth straight Mountain Lion to win the individual title, and the fifth Mountain Lion in the last six years.
