Madison McGriff makes program history as the first women's lacrosse student-athlete to be named Academic All-American. The 2023 Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams, as selected by College Sports Communicators, were released Thursday morning with McGriff being selected to the Third Team.
A native of Lakewood, Colo., McGriff played every minute in goal for the Mountain Lions this season. A two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, McGriff led the RMAC in ground balls per game (4.3), saves per game (11.8), and was third in the league in save percentage (.449) and sixth in goals against average (14.63). In 17 games, McGriff notched 200 saves and 11.8 saves per game which are season records, while her 73 ground balls are the second most in a season. An Elementary Education major with a 3.907 GPA, McGriff led the Mountain Lions to the No. 3 seed in the 2023 RMAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament behind a 5-5 conference record (6-11 overall).
McGriff started the season as a USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-American and finished as a USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America Honorable Mention selection. A three-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Week selection this season, McGriff collected RMAC All-Academic First Team and All-RMAC First Team honors, and she was tabbed the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season.
The 2023 Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom with a minimum grade-point-averages of 3.5 or higher. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes at-large honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
