MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team opened their season Tuesday afternoon at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.M., falling to the Hawks, 18-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Anselm was quick on the attack, possessing the ball for a majority of the first half. Julia Patrick took the first shot of the game and landed it on goal at 12:41 in the opening quarter, but the Hawks gained possession of the ball and were successful on the clear attempt to run the ball straight up the field and put the first score on the scoreboard 24 seconds later. SAC found the back of the net twice within 50 seconds to take an early 3-0 lead.
- Kyer Frederick put the ball of frame in the sixth minute for the Mountain Lions second shot attempt of the game before Peyton Ross tallied her first shot in a Mountain Lions uniform. Annalise Carr attempted a free position shot at 2:07, but the Hawks blocked her shot as UCCS went scoreless in the first 15 minutes of the season opener.
- Trailing 8-1 in the second quarter, Allie Schell took a free position attempt but passed it off to a cutting Kyer Frederick from the right side who slung it in for the Mountain Lions first goal of the game with 7:49 left in the first half.
- The home team took a 13-1 lead after one half of action. The Mountain Lions rattled off seven shots (five on goal) in the first half and picked up nine ground balls.
- Trailing by 13 goals in the third quarter, the Mountain Lions cut into St. Anselm's lead, 14-2 at the 8:41 mark. Goalkeeper Madison McGriff snatched a high pass out of the air and sent it to Julia Patrick who ran down the length of the field to give UCCS a set possession piece. With the ball in stick, Erica Rivera passed the ball as she was falling down from a hit and found Carr on the right side of the net who shot the ball over her right should for UCCS' second goal of the game.
- Trailing 17-2 to start the fourth and final stanza, both teams netted one goal each in the final 15 minutes. Brennan Kelly recorded her first career goal as a Mountain Lion, driving into goal from the left endline, netting the third and final goal for the Mountain Lions.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Three Mountain Lions found the back of the net in the season opener with Frederick, Carr and Kelly each tallying one score.
- Rivera chipped in a team high three shots and an assist while winning two draws.
- Carr matched Rivera's team high three shots while Patrick put both of her shots on frame.
- Kathryn Kossack scooped up a team high three ground balls.
- Defensively, Patrick, Anna Markham and Kendra Knutson each caused a turnover.
- In the net, McGriff stopped 12 shots on goal for a .400 save percentage.
- The Hawks were led by Jess Sullivan's nine points (five goals, four assists) and her game high 12 shots (all on goal). Taylor Cobain (three goals, seven points), Alison Ferullo (four goals, four points) and Lexi Palmisano (three goals) each contributed hat tricks for St. Anselm.
- The Hawks held the advantage over UCCS in shots (41-15), shots on goal (30-10), free position shots (5-2), ground balls (16-14) and draw controls (16-7).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Hawks entered today's game receiving votes in the IWLCA Division II Preseason Poll.
- All three East Coast teams the Mountain Lions face this season will mark the first time playing each of them in program history.
- Six newcomers made their Mountain Lion debut today: Brielle Fannin, Brennan Kelly, Allie Schell, Kendra Knutson, Chloe Currier and Peyton Ross. Kelly (goal) and Schell (assist) also notched their first career points for UCCS.
UP NEXT
- UCCS will play at Franklin Pierce University tomorrow, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. (MT). The game was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday but has been moved up one day due to weather.
