HOW IT HAPPENED
- On a frigid night in Colorado Springs, UCCS women's soccer's offense was red hot. The Mountain Lions were firing early and often as they recorded 12 shots in the first half. Goals weren't hard to come by for UCCS either, as Makayla Merlo celebrated her Senior Night Match by burying a penalty kick in the right side to give the Mountain Lions the 1-0 lead at 15:59.
- Throughout the first half, junior forward Jadyn Ledoux was relentless in her effort to find the back of the net but was denied on several opportunities by the offside flag. In the 29th minute, her efforts finally paid off as she broke free at midfield, crossed up Grizzlies keeper Ashlyn Bartley, and finished into the middle of the frame to double the lead.
- UCCS wasn't finished in the first half, as just three minutes later, it was again LeDoux whose aggressiveness drew a foul just outside the penalty area, awarding UCCS a free kick. Sophomore midfielder Anna Vince, who has a knack for cashing in on free kicks inside 25 yards, would take the opportunity. Her reputation as a free kick savant would reign true, as she nailed the left side of the net, putting UCCS up 3-0, a score that would hold into halftime.
- UCCS' offense took a little while longer to find the net in the second half but didn't hold back on trying as they registered another 13 shots in the second half. They would continue the scoring frenzy in the 71st minute, however, when freshman Luka Johson took it herself from the west sideline and navigated the defense to net her first goal as a Mountain Lion.
- Sydney Lasater also wanted in on the action for her Senior Night, and did just that in the 82nd minute. Regan Dare made a short run into the box and dished for Lasater in front, and Lasater pounded two consecutive shots, the first was blocked, but Lasater was there for her own rebound, launching a shot inside the left post to make it 5-0.
