Final: UCCS 10, CSU Pueblo 5
Records: UCCS (19-27, 14-14 RMAC), CSU Pueblo (26-20, 17-11 RMAC)
Location: Runyon Field| Pueblo, Colo.
Series: The all-time series now swings in favor of UCCS with the Mountain Lions owning a 10-9 record over the ThunderWolves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Game four's first runs came in the home half of the second inning with the ThunderWolves getting it started with consecutive doubles off
Evan Langston for the 1-0 lead. A second run was brought it on two outs as an infield single scored one run to give CSU Pueblo the 2-0 advantage.
• A half inning later, the Mountain Lions erased their two-run deficit by putting up a four-run inning to swing the two-run lead in their favor. Back-to-back walks from
Jaeden Hegmann and
Kiichi Sato brought up
Kit Wigington who continued to cause trouble for the ThunderWolves by doubling down the right field line for an RBI.
Caleb Stubbings stepped in for a groundout to shortstop for another UCCS RBI as
Kasey Campbell gave UCCS the lead with a two-run homer to center field to make it 4-2.
• In the bottom of the third, the ThunderWolves jumped ahead of the Mountain Lions by plating three runs. After a sacrifice fly scored the first run, CSU Pueblo's Kysen Howard hit the go-ahead two-run homer with two outs to retake the lead at 5-4.
• CSU Pueblo looked to add onto their lead in the fifth as the ThunderWolves worked a runner to third base with two outs but making a rare relief appearance was
Jonathan Cowles who came in to strand the runner on third and maintain the one-run deficit.
• With the fourth and fifth inning running scoreless, the lead came to change hands for the fourth time in the game as the Mountain Lions got their leadoff batter on with
Walker Rumsey getting a free 90 feet on a hit by pitch.
Nate Heflebower came up next for his first at-bat of the day and reached on a single to the right side as the right fielder mishandled the base hit to result in a speedy Rumsey who never broke stride and came around to score for a tied game. Later in the inning, Wigington came through with a two-out walk to bring up Stubbings who worked a full count and produced a double down the left field line for a 6-5 Mountain Lion lead.
• After holding the ThunderWolves to no runs in the sixth, the game moved into the seventh where the Mountain Lions put the offensive pressure on CSU Pueblo once again. Both
Tyler Richardson and
Macully Sehr reached base on singles as the Mountain Lions quickly loaded the bases with Rumsey drawing a walk. In his first at-bat of the day, Heflebower sent a sac flyout to center field for one run as Sehr advanced and came in to score by reading a ball in the dirt. UCCS continued to add one more run in the inning by capitalizing on a CSU Pueblo error to cap off a three-run inning and boast a 9-5 score.
• Cowles went through ThunderWolves' lineup in the seventh to have the Mountain Lions tack on another insurance run by way of an
Aaron Faragallah sacrifice fly to extend the lead out to 10-5 in the eighth as
Dave Hajek called to the bullpen for
Joseph Harris for the final two innings.
• In bottom of both the eighth and ninth inning, the ThunderWolves had a tough time touching Harris as the senior retired the side in order to close out the series with a 10-5 win.
