Lacrosse Routs Griffins for Fifth Straight Win, 15-7

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team staved off a second half comeback by the Westminster College Griffins Friday afternoon, 15-7, at Mountain Lion Stadium.  The win is the fifth straight victory for the Mountain Lions making it their longest winning streak in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions dominated the Griffins in the first half as the defense held Westminster to just one goal while the offense found the back of the net 11 times for an 11-1 lead after one half of action. 
  • Julia Patrick posted her first assist of the game when she found Hannah Mill at 12:35 in the first quarter for the opening score.  Three minutes later Audrey Napp connected with Patrick for a player-up goal and a 2-0 UCCS.  The Griffins snuck by the UCCS defense at 8:25 in the first quarter for their first goal of the game and their only score of the first half. 
  • UCCS responded to the Griffins goal and notched 10 straight goals to boost their lead to 12-1.  Seven different Mountain Lions put the ball in the net during the 10-0 scoring spree led by Patrick's three goals and two more from Napp.
  • The Griffins comeback started with six minutes left in the third quarter when they put pressure on UCCS, scoring six straight goals cutting into UCCS' lead, 12-7.
  • With a five-goal lead, Patrick led the Mountain Lions charge in the final eight minutes of action, scoring a goal and assisting on both of Mill's and Holly Sodomka's goals to seal the win, 15-7.
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Patrick led both teams with five goals, eight points, seven shots and nine ground balls.
  • Mill was two points behind Patrick after posting four goals and two assists.
  • Eight Mountain Lions scored at least one goal as Patrick and Mill combined to score nine of the 15 goals.
  • Napp and Patrick each assisted on three goals while Mill, Natalie Church and Regan Olson each assisted on two.  Olson added seven ground balls and three shots while Napp won a team high three draws.
  • Madison McGriff played all 60 minutes in goal, stopping a season high 13 shots to improve to 5-3 on the season.
  • Seventeen of UCCS' 44 shots came in the first quarter.  The Mountain Lions defense forced 24 Westminster turnovers and picked up 41 ground balls to WC's 27.
  • The Griffins held the edge in draw controls, winning 17 of the 27 draws.
  • Eden Freiberg led the Griffins behind three goals and eight shots.  Lauren Shoughro added a team high five ground balls and seven shots.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions set several season highs against the Griffins in shots (44), saves (13), ground balls (41) and clears (25).  The 41 ground balls today ties a program record for most ground balls in a game (41 vs. Oklahoma Baptist, March 9, 2019).
  • Hannah Mill set a new single game record for most shots in a game (13). She also added a season high seven shots on goal. 
  • Patrick's five goals, eight points and nine ground balls are all the second most recorded in a game.
